The Huron Expositor, 1999-01-13, Page 66 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, January 13, 111911 Huron County 4-H club members honoured for individual achievement Members of Huron County 4-H clubs were honoured for their achievements during the 4-H Awards Day Program held in Clinton recently. Following are a continuation of results from last week's edition of the Huron Expositor. Completing 24 projects were Laura Martin, Karri- Anne Nicholson, Mike Van Bakel and Mellissa Wallace. Christina DeWit and Crista Vanden Hoven were awarded for completing 36 projects. - Taylor Park and Robert Vanden Hoven were awarded for completing a total of 42 projects. The -Ontario Holstein Branch Award was presented by this year's Holstein Princess to Curtis McNeil. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Goderich Branch, presents an award for the 4-H dairy club member with the highest overall score in the county. This year's winner was Thomas Deuschle, _ whose score was 911 points out of a possible 1,000. Elliott Insurance of BJyth donates a trophy to the champion diary calf at the Seaforth Fall Fair. This year's winner was Carolyn Miller. The Huron Holstein Club Awards are presented to the 4-H dairy club members with the first and second highest score in thc county, who had a holstein calf. With a score of 826 out of 1.000, the first place winner was Irene Schuttel. The Dairy Calf Club member with the second highest score in the county who exhibited a Holstein calf was Tanya Rea with a score of 815 out of 1.000. The Auburn Co-op Trophy is donated by the Auburn Co-op to the 4-H member in Huron County who exhibits the reserve champion 4-1-1 dairy ca at t e ea orth Fall Fair. This year's winner is Thomas Deuschle. The Goderich Branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia presented an award to the top Novice Dairy Showman at the Seaforth Fall Fair. The winner was Kora Bennett. The Teeswater/Belgrave Co-op award is donated by the TeeswaterBelgrave Co- op to the champion dairy showman at the Seaforth Fall Fair. This year's winner was Thomas Deuschle. D & D Glass of Vanastra donated a trophy to the reserve champion dairy showman at the Seaforth Fall Fair and winning the award was Shad'n Ritchie., The Huron County Beef Producers' Award is donated by the Huron County Beef Producers to. the first year beef club member with the highest score. The winner was Brett Bean. The YIS Financial Award is presented by Lawrence Bean of Brucefield to the champion senior beef showman at the Seaforth Fall Fair. This year's winner was Brent Black. Maple Ridge Beef Farm Award is donated by Paul Coultes to the champion junior beef showman,,at the Seaforth Fall Fair. This year's winner was Blake Alton. The Zurich Branch of the Hensall District Cooperative donates an award to the goat club member with the highest score. Heather Becker was the winner this year. The Kootstra Farms Award is presented to the Novice 4-H member in the Huron Goat Club with the highest score. The winner New help available for area children with speech problems Speech and language problems arc the most common handicap facing our children. One in 10 preschool children h4'e speech and -language problems. Research shows that left untreated. these children arc at high risk of lifelong problems including poor achievement in school and • increased school drop-out rates. "These problems are costly to society and are more common than we realize." said Mary Louise Laherge. Speech and Language Pathologist working with the Huron - Perth Speech and Language Initiative in a press release. "Early identification and early treatment can make a big difference. Even young children under two years of age can be helped.. with speech and language development." 'Small Talk', a Huron - Perth preschool speech and language phone line, is up and running today. Parents from Huron and Perth counties can call to ask questions about how their preschooler talks, or how they can help their child develop strong speech and language skills. The line also allows parents and those who provide services to children such as doctors, early childhood educators, and counsellors to refer a child to a speech and language pathologist for assessment. "It is often hard for parents to know if their child has a speech and language problem," states Heather Kane; a Public Health Nurse working with thc Initiative. "Parents should trust their instincts and call 'Small Talk' if they think their baby or child is not learning to talk well." "The 'Small Talk' program is all about making sure that preschool children are given the best chance to reach their speech and language potential," said Kane. ' "The program focuses on prevention, finding children with problems early and making sure they get the treatment they need quickly." 'Small Talk' is working with parents, providers of service to young children, 'speech language pathologists and other professionals to give young children in Perth and Huron County the best possible speech and language services. The program builds _ .on... resources, programs and services already in place. 'Small Talk' is part of a province -wide initiative to improve preschool speech and language services. Huron and Perth community agencies and parents, together with a partnership between the Stratford General Hospital, Perth District Health Unit and Community Care Access Centre Perth County, provides direction to the development, support and delivery of this program with funding from the provincial government. 'Small Talk' is free and available to all preschool children living in Huron and Perth counties. The Jan Hayward Award this year was presented to the goat club member that put forth an outstanding effort.The winner of this year's award was Sarah Broadfoot and Mike Gingerich. The Neil MGGavin Award is donated by Neil McGavin of Walton to the 4-H member with the highest score in the Huron County Plowmen's Club. Tim Devereaux is this year's winner with 866 points out of a possible 1,000. The Royal Bank Award is donated by the Huron/Perth Agricultural Centre of the Royal Bank in Exeter to the first year member in the 4-H Sodbuster Club with the highest score. This year's winner was - Steven O'Rourke. The Ross Gordon Award is donated by Ross Gordon of RR l Seaforth to the 4-H Sodbuster Club member who had the best crown at the 4- H Junior Day at the Huron County Plowing Match. This year's winner was Gerald Corbett. The Townsend Tire Award is presented; to the youngest '4-H member active. in the Sodbuster club. This year's winner was Gerald Dalton. The Agvise Award is presented to the Sodbuster member with the highest total points at the International Plowing Match. This year's winner was Tim Devereaux. The Sodbuster Leader Awards are presented by the leaders of the Sodbuster Club. The first award is for the member 'with the top land plowed at the achievement program by a competitive plow. This award is won this year by Gerald Corbett. The second award is for the top land plowed at the achievement program by a noncompetitive plow and it was won by Gerald Dalton. The Paul Steckle Award is presented to the Huron County 4-H junior member who submitted the top essay on the topic "Proud to be a Canadian". The winner of this award was Tanya Drost. Shawn Drost, a member of the Huron Sheep with 910 points out.of 1,000 received this award. The Don Pullen Award is donated by Don Pullen, the former agricultural representative with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture. Food and Rural Affairs in Clinton. It is awarded to the 4-H member in' Huron County receiving the highest number of points on the basis of awards for 4- H club work in 1998. This year's winner with 979 points out of 1,000 and a member of .the Huron Goat Club was Heather Becker. The Murray Cardiff Citizenship Trophy is donated by Murray Cardiff to the 4-H member in Huron County who best exemplifies the goals and aims of 4-H. Their involvement in the 4- H program, as well as organizations in their community, church and school are all considered. Other aspects such as their leadership roles, ability• to communicate and overall attitude are very important. The nominees must be senior 4=H members and have been involved with 4-H fora number of years. All club leaders were asked to nominate members from their club who they felt qualified for this award. The ' following people were nominated: Heather Becker, Robert Vanden Hoven, James McNaughton, Katie McNeil, Hannah Huizinga, Christina DeWit and Sarah McLellan. These 4-H members have contributed in some way to their 4-H clubs and their community: In their own way they have tried to put into practice what they think good citizenship means. In the end, the interview panel had to. choose one award winner, and they did.
