DAVE EMSLIE PHOTOS Council approves tax break for Legion clubhouse BY GREGOR CAMPBELL Expositor Staff Council approved a tax break for the Main Street South clubhouse of Seaforth Branch 156 of the Royal Canadian Legion at its Dec. 8 meeting. "Premises actually used and occupied as a clubhouse by persons who served of her majesty and Her majesty's Allies in any war." are uniquely qualified for such tax breaks. The tax break must be applied for every year. for period not exceeding 10 years, and will not apply to other property owned by the local branch, clerk/administrator Jack McLachlan explained. In general discussion at council's previous meeting. McLachlan advised that Branch 156 "had paid $4,114 in taxes on the building for 1998, broken down as: $1.865 for municipal purposes. $1,264 for county purposes and $984 for school hoard purposes." :`The building is assessed according to 49 per cent upstairs (hall). 21 per cent land, and 30 per cent basement," according to the clerk's report. "In addition, the Legion pays $499 in taxes on the land and house it purchased ($226 municipal. $153 county, and $120 school board." The exemption. takes effect Jan. 1. and does not apply to taxation "for local improvements and school purposes." according to the bylaw. SASIES Commemorate the newest family member.
