we had Mike nrolet. of the
• NewNX TV. station: visit us
and videotape the students at
work as they 'aired their in-

interview thc teacher and the
students and in the. end'
produced a videoclip of the
students which aired Friday:
' There is .no question that
having someone from the

curious made students take
note •of the importance of
what it was they wero doing. l'
also stopped and, watched as
Mike took. the that: to share
his interest and. enthusiasm for
the work of students and their

The fall fair parade was a
.real hit with residents. The
enthusiasm of the children is
always entertaining.
The autumn colours were
spectacular as we drove
through the countryside on
our fall colour tour.
Church services for the
month were led by Rev.
Kuepler.. Rev. Vandermy.
Rey. Springett, Bob Hulley
and Father Salvidar.
Bill Bibson entertained
residents with many
selections on thc piano.
Things are starting to' take

how important the community
input is •in 'the lite and
curriculum of a school. 1
looked' hack on the past few
months, and recalled speakers
who have' addressed such
tough issues as suicide. and
realized that we. as teachers
are reliant do the' valued -input
of other professionals who
willingly speak at the school:
Father Dino Salvador, is
always willing to visit a class
to help student' Netter
understand the teachings of
the _Catholic Church and how
the teachings relate to the
Suh-iect being shared in the
Slats'.
Local police officers visit
classes and chat with students
about a variety. of issues of
interest. Business people
come to the school and
discuss with husiness students •
what .matters w them as
potential employers and
students Start w understand
the values in the.world of
work. Drug addiction
counsellors arc always willing
to come and talk with one
class or present to an
assembled group and to
candidly discuss with our
students issues of concern'.
School i obviously a place
where students develop those
skills that they will need to
access employment or
-continued education.
,School is much more than
that however. Our societ
expects that, students will get.
information on life issues and
that the curriculum will
doubly' serve the academic
needs of the students while
, enriching the moral and civic
values of the culture(
1 ani always excited when a
teacher makes it possible for a
speaker to visit with our
students.1 am excited partially
because the students will have
a richer ,the
in the class
hut my main source 'of
excitement is the fact that' an
individual or.group is open to
the dialogue of teaching:
These individuals arc willing
to share and as a result,
change our community by.
better informing the:student,
sharing first hand experienced
in an intimate real way that
students seldom forget.
Teachers air often told what
a great job they are doing but
guest speakers need to know
how valued -they arc by all
who hear what they say.

St. Columban receives facelift
as construction project ends
St. Columban has received
a new facelift as the Lavis
Contracting crews finished
their paving job on Highway
#8 (line 34) from Seaforth to
Dublin and through the
hamlet last week.
This makes for a beautiful
new look and a much
smoother journey in the
area. Residents . are
concerned, however,
whether or not the speed
limit will be respected in the
hamlet because of the school
situated here, and the
number of children who live
in the village.
About 50 people of all
ages gathered at the St.
Columban School Gym for
the first Sunday evening
"Community Builder
Project" event.
Toddlers enjoyed mat
games and toys brought
from home school aged
youngsters and teens
enjoyed the gym facilities
with floor hockey and
basketball; board games
were brought out and
played; the adults enjoyed
the euchre games and
visiting. Everyone is invited
next Sunday evening. Nov.,
8, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in
the St. Columban School
gym.
Bring your own pop and a
clean pair of running shoes.
After a devastating fire in
early July which destroyed
their pig barn, the Gerry and
Nancy O'Reilly family arc
- happy to say the new, pig
barn is nearing completion.
The building. constructed by
Fred Groenstegc. is not on
the same site. but an the
farm across ,the road. it will
he ready for pigs in a'few
weeks.
St. Columban had its share
of visitors celebrating
Halloween night.

with lights. pumpkins and

The "spookiest" place to
see was that of Paul and
Linda Savile, whose yard
and tree certainly had the
distinct Halloween theme.
Even "Bart Simpson" got
into the act, as he was
recently seen cutting Pat
Feeny's lawn.
