The Huron Expositor, 1998-09-09, Page 1211-TNt HURON EXPOSITOR. $IPTIMPIR B. 191111 Old engine brought back to life after 30 years A piece of personal history has been brought back to life for a Seaforth area man. Elgin Young has held on to a 70 -year-old antique engine that belonged to his father with hopes of eventually restoring it. "We used to use it for buzzing wood and other chore: 't needed power," said 1t `, urst used when he 1t t Wiarton and can remember it being. used to assist with chores when he was 14 years old. The engine moved around with his family and was. once borrowed by a cement plant -in Shallow Lake before it was retired about 30 years ago. "I had hopes I would be able to do it myself," he said. But his health made it difficult and he contacted Bob LeBeau from the Brucefield area to take on the challenge for him. It became a winter project for LeBeau. - "I knew it would run again," said Young who kept it stored in a shed for decades. "It was running when I put in the shed." But time did take a small toll on the engine. The jacket had froze with water inside it. causing n to crack and a piston rod needed repairs to get it going again. LeBeau built a carriage for it to help Young transport the engine around: It's a heavy little thing," said Young. He would like to be able to take it to antique shows and an upcoming event in Blyth but isn't able to transport the engine himself. While he would enjoy showing the newly working Bob Lebeau (left) and Elgin Young. engine to others, the project was for himself. "I'm keeping it as a memory of my father." he said, hoping he can pass it on to his children to kelp it running in the family.
