Registration at the sixth
annual Dave McLlwain
Hockey School, which
concluded Friday in
Seaforth, was 209, up from
the past three years says
administrator Graham
Nesbitt.
Usually the local school is
able to accept registrations
into July, but this year's first
week was full at the start of
may, and the second week by
June 7.
That second week featured
an all -girls group, ranging in
age from six to 14.
Most registrations arc in
the six to 14 -age range.
About 20 young hockey
players at the school this

year were from Scaforth,
"not more than 10 per cent at
the most," Nesbitt says. The
balance came from places as
far away as Florida (two
players for their second
year), Sault Si. Marie,
Tecswatcr, Lucknow, Cottam
(near Windsor), Wingham,
Ripley, Milverton and points
in between.
AVERAGE AGE DROPS
There was no Shamrock
Hockey School based in
Lucan this summer, and the
University of Western
Ontario now only holds its
hockey, school in London,
both of which contributed to
the plentiful +Seaforth
registrations, says Ncshitt.
The average age for players
at the local school has
dropped dramatically from
14 years old since it first
began, the administrator
says. This year the vast
majority were seven, eight or
nine- years -old.
Ncshitt says the school's
annual "Summer Showcase"
game featuring numerous
professionals drew the best
crowd ever this time around,
and raised roughly $1,100
for the Seaforth and District.
Minor Hockey Association.
For the second year in a
row. the school's centrepiece,
Davq McLlwain, couldn't be
around for much of the
school and this is a worry,
Nesbitt says, even though
another local pro Mike Watt
of the New York Islanders
(for the second year) and
Scott Muscutt of the
Shreveport Mudhugs
(WPHL) filled in admirably
in charge of on -ice programs.
"The comments from
parents were excellent,"
Nesbitt says.
McLlwain, a former 10 -
year NHL veteran from
Seaforth with 100 goals,
recently signed a two-year
contract with Bern in
Switzerland which required
him to fly back immediately
after the Showcase game on
Aug. 19.
