The Huron Expositor, 1998-09-02, Page 5Red dogs and aardvarks make good stories
Summer reading program
took area children places
BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF
Expositor Editor
Turtles, aardvarks and
bears, mixed with time
travel, pirates, dinosaurs and
maybe a dog named Clifford;
that's the stuff of good
stories.
At least it is for the young
people who took part in the
Huron County Library's
summer reading program
this year.
And big, colorful pictures
are important too.
About 30 kids took part in
the program each week that
featured different themes.
Leaders, Jackie Fisher and
Elizabeth Ball wove books
with crafts and games that fit
each theme.
Ball said big, colorful
pictures help them make
their book selections for the
program. As much as the
story is important, the
pictures help keep the
attention of the younger
children in the program.
Another attention getter is
rhythm.
"If it rhymes, it goes over
well," said Fisher. "With a
huge group of kids, that's
what draws them in."
Whenever there's a spare
moment in the program,
she'll grab a -Robert Munsch
book, one of Canada's most
popular authors and Fisher's
personal favorite, even as an
adult. Munsch is known for
unusual stories that rhyme
and flow.
"Always Robert Munsch.
They're fun. The kids'really
get the humor," she said.
She said another important
part of the stories is how
they are told. They pick
stories that they can' ask lots
of questions about, asking
the kids about what they
think will happen next or
how a character will react to
a situation.
Fisher said that keeps the
children interested and part
of the story.
"If there's suspense,
you've got to play it up,"
said Fisher.
A story. called, "Mortimer
be Quiet," uses the phrase in
its title throughout the story
and they encourage kids to
yell it out each time.
Again, it has them
involved and drawn in the
story.
They spend days scanning
the shelves for books and
stories that fit their themes
and go over them to be sure
they are appropriate.
They read a story as many
as 13 times across the county
each week so they tend not
to practice telling the story
ahead of time.
While neither are actors,
Ball said they will use
different voices for each
character to make it more
interesting.
To be a good storyteller,
Fisher said, "You have to be
a little outgoing and not
afraid to be a little silly."
Laura Ashley of Seaforth
left the library each week
with an armload of books.
As one of the older children
in the program, pictures
aren't as important for her.
It's the content of the stories.
She's yet another
generation to discover Little
House on the Prairie by
Laura Ingles and said they
are her favorite books.
"I have almost the whole
set," she said.
While other children had a
tendency to link stories from
books with television and
Disney movies, Ashley is too
young to have been exposed

Library.
to the televised series of
Little House on the Prairie.
"They're interesting," she
said. She enjoys reading
about how the family in the
stories survived with what
little they had.
This year's theme was,
"Reading Takes You Places,"
and featured a day about
Canada, about time travel
and about space among other
themes.

Sydney Falconer, Fraser
Falconer, Katelyn Riley,
