Crocker. worried about the
town's future.
For Devereaux. whose
work includes recruiting
doctors to the town, she
was worried by the loss of,
large businesses like
Canadian Tire and Hart
Ford.
Hospital ,restructuring
was in the forefront and
Devereaux was concerned a
government commission
might look at Seaforth,
question its viability and
decide its hospital was not
necessary.
A committee of about 12
members, originally called
the community action
committee, formed to start
looking at ways to improve
business in town. •
Devereaux suspects it
was because of the town's
committee, already looking
into similar initiatives, that
OMAFRA selected Seaforth
as one of its seven
municipalities r for the
program.
"This kind of fell in our
laps." Devereaux said.
Despite Seaforth's losses
in the ,business community,
councillors at their meeting
last week noted that the
downtown has more stores
open than it ever has
before.
Devereaux is hoping the
committee's work can build
on this, possibly recruiting
more business to town.
A recruiting committee
could be one of the results
after the interviewing has
been finished and analyzed.
The questionnaire
volunteers are following
will take about an hour to
go through and includes
standard questions
gathering • general
information about . the
businesses and is being
used by all seven towns.
But there are separate
questions relating directly
to Seaforth.
Questions cover topics
from what is needed to
help retain customers in
town and whether a town
web page could benefit
them on the Internet to the
importance of building the
heritage of Main Street and
whether various town
departments provide the
help they need.
Representatives from all
seven municipalities will
meet with OMAFRA to go
over the results and then
Devereaux said a public
meeting will be held in
Seaforth to share the
information locally.
The . results will
eventually form a guideline
to be used by the committee
and is what could also lead
to the formation of a
recruitment team.
That may take two to
three years but Devereaux
.said the fact this committee
has even formed is a
positive step to attracting
and keeping business.
She said people can sec

them.
Once the results of the
questionnaire have been
addressed, Devereaux said
the committee can look at
other tasks such as
developing promotional
material for the town and
working on beautification
projects.
These were some of the
ideas being discusses when
they were still the
Community Action
Committee.
The actual interviewing is
expected to last about two
weeks:

"That would be an overall
saving target," Thibert said.
The joint executive committee
will be looking at other
partnerships as will including
areas of finance and
technology, material
management and the two
previously mentioned:
administration and food
services.
Beyond that, Norris said the
partnership may decide to look
at other areas that could
provide cost savings.
Thibert said they hope this
arrangement will satisfy the
Health Services Restructuring
Commission, which, once its
focus !eaves Toronto, is
supposed to visit rural Ontario.
Thibert said they aren't
certain the commission is
going to come here anymore.
But if it does take a close
look at Seaforth and its
partners, he said, "We feel they
won't come in here to merge
hospitals."
