Education benefits locally in budget
BY DAVE SCOTT
Lakeshore Advance Editor
MPP Helen Johns sees more
money for education as one of
the direct benefits for Huron
in the latest Ontario budget
announced May 5 by Finance
Minister Ernie Eves.
"What's important for
Huron is there's a tax
reduction by July I, at least a
personal income. tax
reduction. From income from
business or fAusc taxe,t:.are
reducing. And there's more
dollars for education," Johns
told the Lakeshore Advance.
"As parents we found there
was not enough money for
textbooks, so $150 has been
allotted for each elementary
student for textbooks. The
focus is in the classroom,"
said Johns.
The $150 for books is above
and beyond the individual
grant per student money.
Johns refers to the textbooks
as some "hard copy" both the
parents and children can sit
down together to read. This
initiative by the provincial
government is not to replace
computer usage. There are
separate grants for computers
in the schools.
As far as health, local
hospital boards are coming
together with a common
administration, says Johns.
"It's a start. We're seeing
some of these changes."
The new budget "spends
more on those services
Ontarians have told us are
their priorities - health care,.
classroom education, and
community safety," states
Johns in a press release.
From the Huron County
perspective, the budget
highlights, courtesy of the
Huron MPP's office, include:
• an acceleration of the final
phase of the tax cut to July I,

on corporate taxes
• creation of the Ontario

Foundation with an initial
endowment of $5 million to
attract contributions for clean-
up efforts around the Great
Lakes
• the projected operating
expense for the Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural
Affairs has increased to $340
million.

Ring makes eleventh -hour request
Town hall says
its too late
to change road
BY SCOTT HILGENDORFF

Citing a list of grievances
with town council during the
past 10 years regarding the
development of the Seaforth
Glen Subdivision, George
Ring made an eleventh -hour
request at council's May 5
meeting to stop a road from
being built behind his house.
"It's more like 11:59," said
Reeve Brian Ferguson.

roads in front and behind
their homes; the existing
road in front and and a new
road, part of the
development, behind the
homes.
Ring had a lengthy
presentation to make to
council but was unable to get
through it all within the time
allotted.
"What is your greatest fear
if thc subdivision goes
ahead?" asked Coun. Heather
Robinet.
Ring's main concern is the
existence of the new road
behind his property.
He said the developer and
town have circumvented the
definition of a through lot by
placing a one -foot reserve at
the rear of his property.
Administrator Jim Crocker
told The Huron Expositor the
reserve is what prevents the
properties from becoming
through Tots. It prevents
anyone from building a
driveway in the backyards of
the properties.
In addition to the one -foot
reserve, Crocker also said the
town and developer have
arranged for a privacy fence
to be built along those
properties. The fence will
reduce thc noise and lights
from passing traffic.
Crocker said from the
town's perspective, it is too
late for changes to the road.
"The road is set. The plan
is approved," Crocker said.
king told council the
addition of a road behind his
property contravenes a town
bylaw.
He suggested the
development should have
abutting Tots instead of the
road behind the properties.
"I've got no quarrels about
the layout of that
subdivision," he said, adding,
"A rcar lot abutment is what
we've been asking for, for a
long time."
Crocker prepared a report
regarding Ring's deputation
for council's meeting last
night (May 12), reaffirming
the town's position and
advising that the road issue is
closed.
