The Huron Expositor, 1998-04-22, Page 17Trophies tell unique history of golf club it is often said that the his- tory of a place is told through the people who have con- tributed to its development and continuing progress. The same is true for any golf club. We have been very fortunate to welcome many great play- ers to thc Seaforth Golf Club in the last 38 years. Not all have had their names engraved on trophies. Many who have enjoyed their golf he,re in the past are remem- bered simply by the anec- dotes and stories that grow into near legend as the tales are embellished over the years. However, on the mantel in the clubhouse there is a huge array of trophies that chroni- cle the accomplishments of golfers who have had their "day in the sun" at the local club. We will begin by look- ing at the trophies that have been around for the longest time and perhaps you will read some names that you recognize....maybe even your own. One of our first trophies was the Commercial Hotel trophy donated by Joe and Mary Czerwinski when they owned the Commercial Hotel in Seaforth. The trophy is still actively participated for each September when the Annual Men's Invitational is held. The golfer who gets his name engraved on this trophy is the overall winner of the event with the hest score•of the day. The names on this trophy represent an illustrious group of players. Many of the players have gone on to play in provincial or national championships, and some have even enjoyed careers in professional golf. The first recipient of the trophy was Pete Robinson from 'tratford who shot 72 in 1972. Pete still competes in Seaforth each year, but now he is in the annual Seniors Tournament. Prominent .ama- teurs on thc Commercial Hotel trophy include: Ken Doig Sr. who won it in 1973. Two of Kens sons, Cam and Ian have won the event with four and two wins respective- ly. Other two time winners include Rick Fificld, Len Foran, and Kelly Roberts, who was an NCAA first team All-American four years in a row at the University of Indiana. Doig 4 name is on the trophy the most is Brae Walsh, now a Seaforth resident. Brad has won the event five times since 1987. Last year's win- ner was Seaforth's own Dennis Nielsen who grew up playing the local course and came back home for his first ever win. The lowest winning score was a 64 and both Ian Doig and Brad Walsh share this record. Interestingly enough Ian Doig's two wins came with the lowest and the highest winning scores, a 64 and a 71. The competition is always fierce for this event and the field continues to be very strong. In 1982 Pete Hutchison shot a 66 to finish third behind Ian's 64 and Rick Fificld's 65. Now that's some event. The Shorty Munro trophy was donated for the Low Net Champion in the Annual Men's Invitation. Eric "Shorty" Munro was a local insurance agent. The fun lov- ing practical joker, suffered a debilitating illness in his mid- dle years and the trophy serves as a iememhrance of this popular Seaforth resi- dent. Many local players have played the "round of their life" to win the low net trophy. Thc first recipient in 1972 was Mitchell's Lou Hcinbuck with a net score of 64. Other familiar names include: Jim Watson Sr. in 1978, Bob Kistner in 1984, Frank Vcrbcrne in 1985, Rick Wood in 1988 and 1990, Bob Ahrens in 1989, Keith Connolly in 1993, and Rob Bell (Brad Smith's grandson) in 1996. Last year Seaforth's Brent Vandcnakker was the winner. Along with the trophies for the Mens' Invitational, anoth- er old trophy on the mantel is the Men's Match Play trophy donated by prominent Seaforth businessmen Brad 1998 SDCC N.H.L. Playoff Pool $1000 in Prizes Entry Deadline Fri. Apr. 24 6:00 pm Entry forms may be picked up and dropped off at SDCC Archie's Pizza Train Smith and Don Eaton. Bill McLaughlin was the first to have his name on the trophy in 1971. In 1981 Harry Jansen took the title followed by Doug Elliott, Rod Doig and John Longstaff. Over the years there have been times when the matches were not completed and so no winner was declared. However, other names on the trophy include: Greg Core, Kevin Bennett, and Cam Doig. There was no winner in 1997 although Joe Dick and Jerry Wright made it within one round of finding a champion. In 1982 Bruce Morris from Bermuda gave a beautiful trophy to the club to com- memorate the annual Men's Club Champion. This cham- pionship was dominated by Ken Doig Sr. and his two sons, Cam and Ian until 1994 when Jerry Hiltz was club champion. Jerry's son, Dave, is the current Seaforth Men's Club Champion and will rep- resent Seaforth in thc Ontario Golf Association's Champion of Champions event later this summer. Brian Carricr and Paul Selvey took the title in 1995 and 1996 respectively. It's great to read the names and dates and remember the happy faces o f the members and visitors who achieved golfing success while playing at our local course. Next week we'll check out the Ladies and Junior trophies and you won't believe thc faces you'll remember.
