The Huron Expositor, 1998-04-08, Page 9e -THE HURON QPOS1TO11r Am* S, 1tNN Pins in Sunday so golf season underway The phone rang constantly last week as golfers from around our area inquired about when the "pins would be in". Finally on Sunday, with the sun shining and a brisk wind blowing, the flags were attached to the pins and distributed around the course to the delight of many golfers. It was a race to see who would sign in the book first and head out onto the first fairway. Craig Medd, a local junior player was the first to officially sign in for a tt)und. During the course of the day many members and guests warmed up their -golf muscles after a lengthy win- ter. No doubt there will_ be some groans due to sore mus- cles added to the groans caused by errant shots today. It seemed appropriate that we open on a Sunday and allow the locals a chance to get into the golf season. Golfers in Seaforth were not always able to enjoy their favourite past time on a Sunday. In the 1920s golf on a Sunday was not allowed at Scaforth's course. This one HOCKEY SEAFORTH & DISTRICT MINOR Seaforth wins best -of -five OMHA "CC " Final three game to two. Doig factor played a significant role in the history,of ,'olf in Seaforth. At this time the golf course was located in McKillop Township on the farm of Thomas Dodds. The nine - hole course occupied about 40 acres including parts of the gravel pit which caused considerable headaches and mental stress. The greens were made of sand. providing a :*such different putting sur- face than today's well groomed grass greens. No tractors or mowers were needed to keep the grass short on the fairways because the sheep pastured on the course did an excellent job. The club was quite active with about 50 per cant of the golfers from the Clinton area and the same number from Seaforth.reen fees were only 50 cent day. The care- taker at the tiqia was a Mr. T. Swan Smith Who used field glasses to gest a bird's eye view of any golfers who may not have paid the 50 -cent fee. The elevated clubhouse overlooking the course was quite small but the scene of much activity. Indeed, the place seemed to be a golfer's dream. Unfortunately for the golfer, Mr. Dodds was opposed to golf on the Sabbath. The Seaforth Golf Club offered to purchase the farm at a very lucrative price but Mr. Dodds refused to sell. The decision was made to move the club to another location. Even the clubhouse was moved and eventually became a summer cottage in . Goderich. In 1934 the Seal-orth Golf Holding 'Corporation pur- chased the Case farm just east of our present communi- • e ty hospital. The rugged ter- rain provided an excellent setting for golf and a lengthy nine hole course was built. The par was a challenging 36. Unlike the former course. the greens were grass and the fairways were mowed in the more conventional manner. The large clubhouse, now the home of Charlie Smith and his mother, Flo, was always busy. Caterers were employed to provide full course meals and along with other services, this helped to make the Seaforth Golf and Country Club a popular spot. A number of trophies were competed for including the Ralph G. Cresswell Trophy. It was donated for handicap competition in 1922 at the first course. That year W.F. Southgate won the trophy and Mr. Southgate went on to win it three more times in the 16 year history of the trophy. Other well known names on the Cresswell Trophy includ- ed Dr. William Aherhart. James A. Stewart and Frank Sills Jr. 1937 was the last year the trophy was compet- ed for making Frank Sills the final Cresswell trophy holder. The trophy is on display at the current club. The Seaforth Golf and Country Club operated at this site for several years but began• to falter financially during the Second World War. After the war the mon- See us for all of your spring needs gage on the club was sold and despite attempts to repur- chase it, the club was dis- banded. From this time until the early 1960s local golfers were forced to travel to area courses such as Mitchell, Bayfield, or Goderich to enjoy their sport.
