Rodeo coming to Lucknow
by Scott Hilgendorff
Ji used to be one of the
best kept secrets in
Ontario and the sport-
ing world.
But the secret is already
out in Lucknow where
plans are unfolding for the
first-ever Lucknow Sepoy
Stampede, an event sanc-
tioned by the Ontario
Rodeo Association.
"They always called it
the best kept secret," said
Karyn Foster of A -K
Rodeo (pronounced "ay
bar kay") in Corunna.
The Ontario Rodeo
Association was first
formed in 1957 but at the
time, Foster said there
were only a few rodeos.
The year before A -K was
formed, about four years
ago, there were six rodeos
in the season.
Now, there are two
rodeo producers, A -K, the
newest, formed about four
years ago, and Big L.
Together, with rodeo com-
mittees in towns across
Ontario, they will produce
22 rodeos held between
late spring and early fall
with cowboys and cow-
girls competing for prize
money through to the
championships.
Lucknow is also part of
a Dodge Truck Series
which spans eight of A-
K's rodeos with prizes
awarded at the end of that
series. prior to the ORA
championships.
"This will he the
biggest year for the ORA,"
said Foster.
In the past few years,
interest in rodeo has
grown considerably.
Less than two years
ago, ORA membership
was at about 225. This
year, Foster said there are
more than 400 members of
which 90 per cent are
competing cowboys and
cowgirls.
That's how many com-
petitors could be coming
to Lucknow on Aug. 29
and 30.
The rodeo will consist
of two shows, one each
day, containing the seven
events necessary to
become a sanctioned
rodeo: bareback bronc rid-
ing, steer wrestling, team
roping, saddle bronc rid-
ing, barrel racing, calf rop-
ing and bull riding. In
addition, A -K holds cow-
girl breakaway roping,
junior barrel racing, junior
steer riding and mutton
busting.
