Boards
choice
The Avon Maitland Distnct
School Board has a decision
to make concerning the fate
of junior kindergarten.
Associate director of edu-
cation John Patterson
informed the board at its reg-
ular meeting Jan. 27 that cur-
rently Huron County schools
provide junior kindergarten
while Perth County schools
do not. He said trustees
Would have to decide
whether to implement a
junior kindergarten program
in Perth, discontinue the pro-
gram in Huron or maintain
the status quo.
Currently Huron schools
offer blended junior kinder-
garten and senior kinder-
garten classes in each ele-
mentary school in the district.
In 1996, the Perth board can-
celled a junior kindergarten
program, set to enter the third
of a four-year implementa-
tion period, because funding
was not available.
However, the local educa-
tion improvement committee
(LEIC) for district school
board 8, which was struck to
make recommendations to
the new board, resolved that
support, in principle, be
given to the importance of
junior kindergarten.
The LEIC for the new,
board also recommended that
they be. encouraged to inves-
tigate the possibility of offer-
ing the program in all ele-
mentary schools.
Dismissing the idea of hav-
ing the program in one dis-
trict and not the other,
trustees, nonetheless,'
expressed concern funding
would not be available for
implementing the junior
kindergarten program in
Perth schools.
Patterson said the provin-
cial government's actions,
providing stub -year funding
for schools providing junior
kindergarten last fall, is an
indication the ministry is in
support of early years pro-
grams and will fund such
programs.
Patterson noted that some
schools in Perth which were
part of the two-year imple-
mentation program could
begin offering junior kinder-
garten without additional
capital costs.
Despite Patterson's state-
ments on the ministry's fund-
ing intentions trustees decid-
ed to reserve judgement until
they continue the discussion
at its Feb. 10 meeting in
Clinton.
Deer collisions
There are so many.colli-
sions between motorists and
deer in Huron County that
the Goderich detachment of
the Ontario Provincial Police
has started to issue bi-month-
, ly reports as an alert.
There were 12 collisions in
the ''first two weeks of
January, the majority to the
north and west of our imme-
diate area, although there was
one on sideroad 10 in Hullett
Township, about two kilome-
ters north of Highway 8, the -
first day of the new year
resulting in moderate dam-
age.

son' campaign serve soup at the soup luncheon held at the Seaforth Curling Club to kick off Heart
and Stroke month. (Fitton photo)
Computer network between schools
approved, but not without some concern
Action ordered by the
director of education for the
Avon Maitland District
School Board to improve
communications between the
Huron and Perth districts
elicited concern about costs
from trustees during the Jan.
27 meeting of the board.
Paul Carroll said he
instructed Huron superinten-
dent of business and finance,
Janet Baird -Jackson, to use
funds and hardware from the
Huron district to extend the
computer-based wide area
. network (WAN) that links
Huron schools and offices to
include those in Perth.
The network will allow
staff members to use their
computers to contact, leave
messages, and to communi-
cate with other members
linked to the school board's
network.
However, Trustee Atjc
Tuyten, of Stratford, noting
there was a lot of discussion
regarding activity taking
place in Perth schools as the
network was set up, said she
had not seen any costs associ-
ated with the activity and
asked where approval for the
project originated.
Explaining his belief that
officials in each school
would want more efficient
communication system,
Carroll said, "If I have erred
in my interpretation of what
schools want, then, I must
accept responsibility."
Pointing out areas where
the network would benefit
the board, Jackson -Baird said
information could be shared
in a more timely fashion than
through regular channels, and
noted Huron has documented
savings in long distance calls
and saving to staff who no
longer have to play "tele-
phone tag" in order to convey
information to other staff
members.
Tuytcn said she was not
against the use of technology
but it is up to the board to
make decisions on projects

that require funding.
"I have grave concerns
about where the money is
coming from," she said.
Trustee Bob Allen, from
Huron County, took a differ-
ent position as he said he
agreed the board has to
approve spending, but some
things have to proceed.
Noting there are 21,000
students and 2,000 employ-
ees in the system, Allen said,
"I want my rights as a trustee
but 1 don't want to grind the
system toa halt.
