Capacity crowd attends veteran's dinner Last Saturday night, the annual veterans dinner was held with a capacity crowd in attendance. The head table guests were piped in by piper Jim McLean, Brussels. President, Jim Watson wel- comed everyone and opened the proceedings with the car- rying of the colors under Sgt. -at -Arms Gordon De Jong. The Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 156 served the usual delicious dinner and they were thanked by Jean Ross. First Vice President, Linda Gridzak introduced the head table guests including Mayor Irwin Johnston and Doreen, Mayor Johnston brought greetings from the town of Seaforth; Deputy Zone Commander Cl Eric Ross and Debbie, he brought greet- ings from Zone C1. Zone Commander Cl Ladies Auxiliary Eva Brown and Jim, Eva also brought greet- ings from the Ladies Auxiliaries of Cl, President Ladies Auxiliary Branch 156 Mary Doig and Ken, Mary spoke on the good rapport between the Branch and the Auxiliary and presented President Jim with a cheque for $5,000 from the Auxiliary for use as the Branch sees fit. The guest speaker Dan Blenkinsop of Wiarton was introduced, he gave a very moving slide show and com- mentary on a trip he took with the Legion in 1996. The slides were of the battlefields and cemeteries of World War 1 and World War II. His com- mentary was in explanation of the slides. This is a very moving presentation and brought back vivid memories to the veterans who took part in many of these battles. After the dinner Joe Higgins and partner enter- tained the crowd on the piano accordion and guitar. This was enjoyed by everyone. Sunday the annual church parade was to Egmondville church led by the Brussels Legion Pipe band. Last Thursday members of the Branch and Auxiliary went to Seaforth Manor and Maplewood Manor for their annual memorial service. Major (Rtd) Frank Golding conducted the services which are well received by the resi- dents. Saturday, November 22 a Fish Fry will be held at thc Branch, tickets $8 per person. There will be the usual entertainment, etc. Only 100 tickets will be sold so get your tickets early. They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. Potluck held instead of Christmas dinner The St. Columban Catholic Women's League held a mother -daughter potluck sup- per on Nov. 7 in the Knights of Columbus Hall at St. Columban. This was instead of the annual Christmas din- ner. A large crowd of mothers, daughters, mothers-in-law and friends enjoyed a variety of the ladies favorite casseroles, salads, desserts, etc. Carol Ryan gave a medita- tion on a reading from the Book of Ruth and Anne Murray led in the grace and blessing. Following the supper sever- al games of bingo were played. The lucky winners were Mary Connolly, Kelly Cronin (2), Mandy Murray (3), Diane Cronin, Pat Koehler, Rita Moylan, Erin Flanagan, Julianne Ryan (2), Joanne Flanagan, Catherine Ryan, Maryann Feeney, Nancy Kale, Erin Feeney and Amanda Ryan. Door prizes were won by Mary Connoliy, St. Columban by Cecilia Ryan 345-2028 Maureen Bruxer and Monica Elllgsen. Guests with Gerry and Karen Ryan, Amanda, Jason and Jeremy on Sunday to cel- ebrate to Jeremy's 13th birth- day were Dale and Susan Cronin, Deklan, Connor and Kaden of Dublin and Cecilia Ryan of St. Columban. Sympathy of the communi- ty is extended to Mrs. Joanne (Cronin) Regier and family, formerly of the St. Columban area, on the sudden death of David Regier, husband and father on Wednesday, October 29. Sympathy also to Mary and Leo Smith of Acton, Steve and Nancy Cronin, Jim and Karen Cronin, and Jerry and Heather Cronin all of St. Columban ori the death of their brother-in-law. Anniversary service on tap th On November 17 and Hensall and District Horticultural Society will hold a potluck supper in Hensall United Church at 6:30 p.m. followed by a meeting at 8 p.m. Hensall United Church will have an Anniversary Service on November 16 at 10 a.m. The guest speaker will he Dave Williams. There will he a Stratford Soul Singers con- cert with soloist Cindy 'Brown at 3 p.m. For tickets call Janice at 262-3505 or Joanne at 263-5683. Following the church service a ham, bean, and potato mcal will be served at no charge. Everyone is welcome. Bingo and hymns popular Everyone was a winner in Monday's bingo game with the Bethel Reform Women. Residents also enjoyed the hymn sing led by the Reform Women. Games were played and songs were sung follow- ing exercises during fun and fitness throughout the week. Patricia Dobbs of Exeter Anglican Church led the ser- vice Tuesday at church with Shaven Dignan as pianist. In the evening residents were entertained by the talented Christian Reform Singers. A program with the hymns list- ed on it enabled residents to join in singing their favorites. It was beautiful. Winnie Hutton was in on Wednesday to lead the Bible study. "Senior Saints" Growing Older in God's Family. Residents benefit from conversing with Mrs. Hutton and her leadership as pastoral care volunteer. Laughter could be heard in the activity room as residents watched thc comedy "Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy", our Thursday afternoon movie. Life After RRSPs was the topic of Friday afternoons seminar with guest speaker Carien Jutting, a certified financial planner, retirement income counselor with a bank. The presentation was interesting and easy to under- stand. Also present was Carol Yull and Diane DeWys, both of another bank, who willing- ly answered questions from the audience. Claire Masse and Doug Insley entertained retirement home residents and guests at the Friendship Friday evening. As they travelled down county and township roads here in Ontario, Jerome, Jerry, Ronald and Arthur Murray of our area came around 7.30 p.m. Oct. 30 to a tractor on the road with its lights on, and with the lens covered with mud. It was really scary. Our driver was really paying attention to his driving. Just down the road a few kilometers there was a car accident. We hope we never see another one like it again. We got there. P.S. Frances Melady spent the weekend in London with Pat and Harry Ryan and family.
