Why was an illegal strike the only course of action? This is as close as they got... "There were too many things in Bill 160 that were unclear ... and we couldn't wait any longer," said Seaforth Public School prin- cipal Lorne Rideout. "I'm not going to apologize for that and I'm not going back until it's cleared up ... never." That answer — the only one given all night — didn't directly answer the question posed by St. Joseph -area resi- dent John Vanderburgt. "A lot of parents feel manipulated by both sides," he said during the question and answer period of what was set up by local teachers as an information meeting to outline their concerns with Bill 160. No representatives of the provincial government were present as about 200 people crowded into the Zurich arena auditorium. "If kids are the big concern, then they should be in school right now," Vanderhurgt con- tinued, wondering why the teachers were opposed to staying in school while nego- tiations continued. "As a parent I'm really pissed off. Why couldn't you have just stayed in class and negotiated those points?" And the illegal strike will continue. Hope of ending the walkout this week failed Monday when a provincial PHOTO BY DAVID SCOTT FULL HOUSE - A packed Seaforth Legion hall of parents and teachers asked and answered questions about Bill 160 Monday night while Seaforth Public School principal Lorne Rideout, at tar right, chaired the proceedings. Similar meetings have been held around the county. judge declined the govern- ment's request for an injunc- tion that would have forced the teachers back into the classroom. It was his ruling the week old strike has not yet done irreparable harm to education in Ontario and the govern- ment shot{ld wait and approach the Ontario Labor Relations Board in conjuc- tion with its school boards, which normally are the bod- ies that negotiate with teach- ers. Thursday, the evening start- ed with teacher representa- tives from Zurich's public and separate schools outlin- ing what they felt were prob- lem areas in the education - reform legislation. Zurich Public School prin- cipal Deb Gill ran the meet- ing, starting off by speaking of the bill's "emotional" impact on teachers, but also understanding the bill itself can be confusing. • Knowing that, they took a good chunk of the meeting to outline what areas of concern lie within the 262 -page pro- posed bill. The educators worked to bring some understanding of their fight, from agreeing with funding reform to bal- ance rural and urban educa- tion dollars, to being out- raged by what they see as a power grab by the provincial Tories with no regard for quality of education. Q. Will my funeral cost any less if 1 plan it now? A. Usually it does cost less when we pre -plan our funeral service. There is often a significant savings in cost because most funeral homes can offer you programs that will lock in the cost of most of your funeral arrangements at today's prices thereby pro- tecting your heirs against any possible inflation. Gill said the teachers are concerned about the size of classes, teaching time versus other responsibilities, teacher qualifications, school clo- sures and board closures. What it is not about is money or jobs, they claim. "We're not doing this for the money. If we were doing this for the money we'd be in class ... we'd be in another business," said Hensali Public School teacher Doris Becker. • CONTINUED on page 18 18". 24". 30" SATELLITE DISHES Slartifng at $ 299°0 We carry ECHO STAR, SONY, RCA, HUGHES, HITACHI, CANADIAN STAR CHOICE & EXPRESS VU 7ak a Sue stfoxc Dustomastatitot CALL!A•1 ENTERPRISES 1400.293.2378 W1)416'0E10 "' TNI MINION exposerQ .
