BUSY JUDGING -: (Above) Huron County 4-H members
judge bags of grain for a whole set of criteria at the station
manned by Seaforth Ag. Society president Paul Dodds at
the judging competition held last Tuesday night at the
Seaforth Fairgrounds. Competitors judged grains, live-
stock, eggs, cut flowers and had a quiz. At right, Andrew
Toll of Blyth judges some milking goats in the pens.

released through the plant's
regular operation and through
accidents that lead to heavy
water releases in the lake.
"What we're trying to find
out is what is the background
level of tritium in the lake,"
said LaMarre.
The last study was done in
1983 showing an average
level of 9.1 becquerels per
litre of water. A becquerel is a
form of measuring radioactiv-
ity in water.
The World Health
Organization has set 7,800
becquerels per litre as the safe
limit for tritium in drinking
water.
"You can see how small the
concentration of tritium is in
the lake," said LaMarre.
Higher levels have been
found near the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development with
even higher levels of tritium
between Kincardine and Port
Elgin, relating to spills from
the BNPD. In Port Elgin, the
1996 average was 30 bec-
querels per litre but it has
been higher.
"We're trying to update old
information and trying to see
if there's been any change,"
LaMarre said, expecting to
see the tritium concentrations
in Lake Huron, lower than in
1983.
"The weapons testing put a
lot of tritium in the environ-
ment," he said.
Tritium has a half-life of
about 12 years. That means,
after 12 years, half the origi-
nal amount of tritium is gone.
After another 12 years, half
that amount is gone.
"Sooner or later, we're
going to reach a point where
all the nuclear tritium is
gone," LaMarre said. "At that
point, anything left will be
natural or Ontario Hydro's."
Part of LaMarre's role is
monitoring the environment.
"This is part of our ongoing
surveillance," he said.
LaMarre prepares a report
each May that looks at such
areas as the tritium levels in
drinking water near the
nuclear power developments.
He expects to include infor-
mation from this current study
in the May, 1998 report.
Background work for the
study was done more than a
year ago. before this month's
announcements that much of
the Bruce Nuclear Power
Development, and facilities in
Pickering, would be shut
down' to be upgraded because
of their poor operating condi-
tion.
"We're trying to be proac-
tive. This is an instance where
we're being proactive instead
of getting dragged into it, said
LaMarre about the current
study.
"When everyone, has the
facts, people are more 'at
ease," he Aid.
