The one -woman comedy
Overboard! at the Blyth
Festival will particularly
appeal to women, judging by
guffaws from the audience on
opening night at the Dinsley
Street Garage last
Wednesday.
Not that men won't chuckle
along as well, but perhaps not
as herrtily given the feminine
subject matter
Many women will probably
identify more with Dot
Lawton's predicament, and
the way veteran Second City
director Deborah Kimmett
plays her.
Kimmett both wrote and
stars in the show. and her wit
shines through.
The work was inspired by
her sister-in-law Vicky "and
the countless women who
manage to do 10 things at
bound to make the ladies giggle at Blyth's Garage
once," she comments in the
program notes. '
Lawton wins a Caribbean
cruise in this play, but rather
than relaxing finds herself in
the midst of some mighty
strange female characters, to
which she acts as a foil and
through which the comedy
emerges.
She ends up adrift, in more
ways than one.
Her various facial expres-
sions are worth the price of
admission, above and beyond
the humour in what she has
to say.
The show is directed by
Annie Kidder, he first full
production at Blyth.
She began working with
Kimmett when she directed
the workshop production of
Kimmett's play Miracle
Mother, and its later premiere
at the Tarragon Theatre.
It was produced in Toronto.
Calgary and Vancouver and
nominated for the 1995

Kimmett has been working
in Canadian theatre for 16
years, starting with the
