"We are really having fun with this (production). 1t is truly a collaborative effort and we're coming up with some beautiful material," says Blyth Festival's Artistic Director Janet Amos who is directing the Young Company this year along with Rachel Brophy and David Archambault. The youths participating in the show come from Blyth, Clinton: Vanastra. Goderich. Seaforth. Listowel" and W ingham. For Mike Mullin of Seaforth, this is his fifth year in the Young Company oast. This is the first time he's worked with Artistic Director Janet Amos. One benefit of working with the seasoned theatre vet- eran is that she's got pull with the box. office. They've seen all the shows at Blyth so far. "We're going to see Melville Boys (at Blyth) and Romeo & Juliet (in Stratford)." he said. Ga Compared with the other productions he's done in the past with Blyth, there's more music in this one, he says. Mullin, a guitarist, says he will hopefully have a chance to play as part of this perfor- mance. There is actually so much music in this collection of skits that the Young Company has its- own musi- cal director - Cathy Nosaty, whoa was musical director for the 1995 Blyth Festival pro- duction of Ballad for a Rum Runner's .Daughter. Pie also features original songs by the Company and a variety of instruments - everything from flute, trumpet and accordion to piano and guitars. "The production itself is as eclectic as the music, featur- ing fantasy, skits, poems, songs, dances. stage fighting, acrobatics and even fencing," according to a Blyth press release. When the Huron Expositor visited the compa- ny in rehearsal at Londesboro. Mullin said the content was still being worked on. "It's growing as we're making it." Of the cast of 12, five have returned, including Mullin. from previous years. When asked why.he likes to be involved with Young Company productions instead of spending the summer on the beach like lots of other kids, he was kind of at a loss for words. "There arc, I think, 28,000 people working at tracks in Ontario," he said. "It is an industry they (Ontario government) are interested in keeping going." Apart from assisting the • problem." but he also noted, "Over consumption. whether it is eating, drinking or gam- bling, is going to be a prob- lem. ' He added that with the post sibility of the over consump- tion of gambling becoming a problem in Ontario, "the gov- ernment is going to have to allocate- money for any prob- lems that gambling docs cre- ate." He stressed again that by having the gaming in a restricted area, it will be available only, to those who make the effort to go and gamble. In answer to concerns that a building for such activities as horse racing, or playing VLTs and bingo in Clinton would create gambling problems in town, Fleming pointed out that a small percentage of those who bet on horses in town are in fact from Clinton. He explained, for example, that at the off-track betting facilities at Jonnymores "less than 10 per cent of the people there for the races pay taxes in the Town of Clinton." This same 'figure, he said, holds true for the Sunday races at raceway, along with the Ontario government coffers, there is also the chance that communities hosting gaming centres will benefit. However,. 'the method for splitting the price tadt, from„ a naming cen- tre has yet to -be -resolved. In fact, the whole issue of having VLTs come to the province has yet to be decid- ed. "They (government) haven't made any definite decision what they are doing with the whole gaming issue," Fleming stated, adding that a decision is expc:.ted to be made this fall. While the committee awaits a decision from the govern- ment, it is looking into the possibility of erecting a build- ing to house the gaming cen- tre. This plan, however, has a dark side for taxpayers and the community. Here's what they aren't saying: • Beer, wine and spirits customers will lose the convenience of one stop shopping at the LCBO. • With beer products removed from LCBO shelves and cold rooms, the LCBO store may close or be reduced in size and operating hours. That means lower property tax grants for; Vie, town. • Beer Store profits go to the large multinational companies that own Brewers' Retail whereas LCBOOpr tS,$p: tp. the people of patolo. • LCBO jobs .v4ifl, a jet resulting Oona wimpolopppat.
