Nine years of sand and sandwiches
,By Matthew Ttiebeer
• - to our parents.
;Nine years. We have been
' here a total of nine years.
kindergarten to grade eight.
Nine years of sand -and sand-
wiches. And for the first time
' in those nine years, Matthew
Triebner is speechless.
I have had an incredibly
difficult time deciding on a
topic, it's an impossible task.
I could talk about anything -
-being lucky enough to share
my birthday with Mrs.
Cooper, our favorite secre-
tary. who has never disap-
pointed us in any way what-
soever. Or I could talk about
the depletion of the education
system. But this year, I have
decided to honor a very spe-
cial group of people. These
special people have been
there every day of our nine
years, teaching us how to tie
our shoes, or catching us up
in math. They are underpaid,
but still do their job perfectly.
This year, it's time to .honor
our parents.
Parents play a very impor-
tant role in the education sys-.
tem, why. if parents weren't
there. who'd yell at the teach-
.ers and tell them when
they're wrong - other than
Amy that.is. They give us the
gum we chew constantly in
class, or make us "earn" the.
money for. it. They also have
taught us the morals we need
10 survive in this world (don't
talk to people with secondary
colors of hair. -never eat fat-
free mayonnaise. and other
words of wisdom). But most
of all, they've been there for
us. after a bad mark, or just a
bad day - parents know how
to make things better in any
situation.
Parents will do almost any-
thing for us - anything. Aaron
and Ashley's parents chauf-
feur them all over this coun-
try, and the next, in pursuit of
hockey - or is it hooky? Dan
Rathwell's parents have man-
aged to change his room.
clothes. pencils. pens, and
hats every time Wayne
Gretzky changes teams. And
in case you're wondering, the
reason Laura does so well in
math (other than the fact that
she pays Mrs. Mills) is
because, well, her father is a
dairy farmer. Uh.yeah, and
tor mom's a teacher, along
with both Ian's parents. Tait's
dad, and Kent's mom - well
not technically, but any-
way....Chad's mom provides
him with the chocolate he
needs to stay awake during
class. Not only can Laura
Mustard add, subtract, multi-
ply and divided, but she can
also fix a toilet in three easy
steps. And all of our parents
have given us the pleasure of
their tales of the good old
days, when they had to walk
11 miles to school (what's a
mile), - uphill both ways, in
the middle of a howling
storm. no shoes (because in
their day they didn't have -
shoes), while carrying an ele-
phant on their back - thanks
guys!
Our parents give us reasons
to miss school like...haircuts.
Yeah, um I had a hair
appointment in Munich,
yeah, that's right, Munich.
They also provide notes
explaining "Matthew was
away today", or the ever so
brilliant "Matthew will be
away today". Gee dad, you
have brilliant grasp for the
obvious and in case you
haven't guessed. I'm being
sarcastic. Parents have also
been so gracious as to share
note -forging, and class -skip-
ping techniques. By the way
Mr. Payne. there really is no
such place as Coolspring.
Freemont or Ohio for that
matter. I made them up.
While you thought I was
socializing with friends at
engine shows, I was sitting at
home doing nothing. And
y.ou.might as well know,
Tannis, Tanya, Alison and
Lindsey aren't really moving,
they just couldn't stand
another day of Garnet
Rogers.
But parents don't have it
that easy. Can you imagine
making sure your kids get on
and off the bus in time. espe-
cially with younger children'!
Worrying about your child,
getting run over by an Oscar
Mayers truck, and are lying
under a pile of assorted horse
meat as we speak. Although
sometimes I think my parents
fantasize about the
day...Actually. I've been
lucky enough to have ripped
a chunk of bone off my :hip
while running 'from -a pack of
crazed stalkers. and haven't
had to worry about taking the
bus for last month.
There are other things of
course. Did you know that
my mom ha made my lunch
for the past nine years and
they're letting me graduate -
that's more than 1512 lunch-
es. excluding holidays. P.D.
days, and even sick days. But
don't think my dad hasn't
done -anything, he's supplied
me with a calculator to help
improve my math skills.
Let's face it. if it wasn't for
our parents we wouldn't be
enerationext. this is mainly
because well. we wouldn't
exist.
So as I leave you, I'd like
for you to remember the peo-
ple who literally made this
day possible. We may have
problems with them. prob-
lems that just won't go away.
with hugs. The answer to
these problems, my friends.
is, is, I don't know. But I do
know that whatever we do. as
long as we're happy, our par-
ents will share our joy.
