FOX RETURNS - David Fox returns. as Christy Bauman' and Sharon Bemhaum plays Katie Brubacher in a scene from Blyth Festival's 1997 production of Quiet in the Land. Powerful performance of Quiet BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Editor What's left to sa!, about a play that has won both the Governor General's award and the Chalmers award and opens Blyth Festival's 1997 season with a stellar cast'' Except that it's great. Quiet in !lie Land by Anne Chislett, new artistic director for Blyth Festival beginning this fall, officially kicked nil the new season on Friday night, the last season for cur- rent artistic director Janet Amos. A full -house enjoyed this compelling drama featuring both talented processional actors and excellent perfor- mances by local community members of the cast. Well known Canadian actor David Fox (Road 10 Avuntlea) returns to his role as Christy. the religious leader for his Amish community. who struggles with how their beliefs mesh with a World War. His son Yock, wonder- fully played by the young Barna Moric/, rebels against his father. his religion and the girl he loves, Katie (Sharon Bernbaum), when he decides II ALI to enlist in the army and fight for Canada. Another Blyth regular. Jerry Franken, plays Zepp who tries to offer balance to his friend Christy and peace to the community when con- flicts of language, faith and modernism arise. The dialogue, sets and cos- tumes fittingly transport the audience to an old order Amish community held together by strong moral beliefs, German ancestry and pacifism. In stark contrast. Dick Murphy is excellent as the not -too -sober Irishman Mr. Mr. John Laneink, and his children would like to invite you to an 80th Birthday Open House for Anne Lansink at Seaforth LBglon ou Saturday, July 5, 1997' 2:00-5:00 plum Best Wishes only Graduation 9ason 9Ev Beuttenmiffer, son of Bob and Betty Beu t teruniffer, graduated from Laurentian University to Sudbury on Sat. Loge Mom and Dad, Lisa and Dieter, Brad and Parn. O'Rourke, and provides great conic relief. He's also at the centre of one of the most poignant scenes of the play. There's a nice contrast between the old older and stern Hannah (Sharon Bakker). mother of Christy and Lydia (Kirsten Van Bitten), wife of Zepp, who finds fascination in the "mod- ern" inventions of her, neigh- bours. There are strung perfor- mances by all in this touch- ing, powerful play. Quiet in the Land runs in repertory at the Biyth Festival until July 25.
