Chislett named as artistic director for 1998
A well-known and award-
winning playwright, one of
the founders of the Blyth
Festival more than two
decades ago, will succeed
Janet Amos as artistic direc-
tor in 1998.
Anne Chislett was chosen
titer a four-month search. in
whin 25 candidates were
considered, by the bot f
directors on April 6. She as
been a dtamaturg - coaching
playwrights as they prepare
their scripts - for the Festival
under the leadership of Amos
for the past two years. and
many of her most successful
plays premiered at Blyth..
As a playwright, Chislett
bas received two Chalmers
Canadian Play Awards, the
most recent last year for
Fiippin' in, a play for young
audiences. She also won in
1982 for Quiet in the Land.
for which she also won a
Governor General's Award in
1993. The play is being
brought back to Blyth for this
upcoming season.
AWARD WINNING
Her plays. also including
Yankee Notions and The
Tomorrow Box, have been
produced by many theatres in
Canada sad abroad. A
Japanese production of the
latter won "bast production"
award in Hiroshima in 1989.
She has also wriUcn for ttadio
and film.
Chislett has also served an
internship in aka/Daturgy at
the Banff Playwrights Centre
and Canadian Stage in
Toronto. to 1995 she taught
play writing with4 the
University of Western
Ontario's Faculty of Part -
Time and Continuing Studies,
and in various courses for
Theatre Ontario.

The London Free Press is
one of Canada's oldest dailies
and Canada's second-largest
independent. Netmar was

came
as a surprise to most media
watchers, were not disclosed.
With the acquisition, Sun
Media will publish 11 dailies,
84 weeklies and shopping
guides and 15 farming and
specialty publications in
Canada and the United
States. It will make it the sec-
ond largest daily newspaper
group in Canada, based on
circulation, second only to
Hollinger Inc., controlled by
Conrad Black.
Storefront Conservation is
the topic of the day for a tree
workshop being offered in
Seaforth on Saturday. May
24. This workshop. spon-
sored by the Ministry of
Citizenship, Culture and
Recreation and hosted by the
Seaforth Local Architectural
Conservation Advisory
Committee (LACAC). will
draw people from across
Southern Ontario.
Participants will have the
opportunity to learn more
about topics such as t he his-
tory and components of
storefronts. municipal plan-
ning issues in conserving his-
toric commercial centres, and
sources of assistance for
storefront conservation.
In the afternoon there will
be a hands-on field activity
examining three storefronts
in Seaforth'b Designated
Heritage District (Main
Street). The goal of the work-
shop is to provide cost-effec-
tive ways to help communi-
ties and property owners con-
serve and make effective use
of their commercial heritage
resources.
The workshop is being held
at the Seaforth Legion. 123

announces
grants for Blyth
A cigarette company,
through the du Maurier Arts
Council, announced more
than $30,000 in grants for
southwestern Ontario
Monday, which includes
513,000 to the Blyth Festival
for general spending for its
1997 season.
"Except for the Laidlaw
Foundation, its the highest
amount we receive," noted
the director of development
for the Blyth Festival.
It could be the last time.
The federal government is
pushing legislation that
would forbid tobacco compa-
nies from sponsoring arts and
sports events, arguing it pro-
motes tobacco consumption.
