April tests hardiness of Canadian golfeo
April is indeed the cruelest
month, especially for
Canadian golters. One week-
end we bask in glorious sun-
shine and balmy breezes in
our unpressed golf clothes
hastily retrieved from the
"summer closet." The next
weekend we awaken to the
sound of abet swiping the
window panes and a dusting
of white stiff over the tee
blocks and greens at the local
links. The fact that it was
:Masters -weekend only added
insult to injury for those of
use anxious to begin a new
season of golf.
As those lucky enough to
beat Augusta witnessed his-
tory in the making. golfers in
living rooms around the
world cheered Tiger along as
he took our game teen&
heights. Tiger's brilliant shot-
making was only equalled by
the brilliance of his smile.
Golfers everywhere will
remember where they were
the day Tiger won his first
major.
The Masters has always
• been a signal to Canadian
golfers that the golf season is
about to begin in earnest.

Prince Rupert to Prince
Edward Island, Canadians arc

basement and heading to
their local course. They are a
hardy lot these Canadian
golfers. They have to be.
They pursue golf in a country
where most ofthe months are
cold and cruel. in.a country
where the Easter bonnet is as
. often as not a toque, anyone
who wants to play golf must
dress for the worst.and hope
for the best.
It is a tough time to be out
on the course. Our bodies are
. stiff and perhaps a little out
of shape from the long .winter
of indoor sporting. We must
bundle up in several layers of
clothing including hats and
mitts. The course is soft and
there's no roll to increase dis-
tance on our shots. We are
out of practice and our expec-.
talions are too high. It is easy
to become frustrated with our
game. but .let's face it, it's
only April and every day is a
bonus. Use this month to tune
up the muscles and the mind
