Canadian Short Track cham-
pionship, was hold following
the North American event. in
Charlottetown. P.E.1. Hunt
says the calibre of skating .at
the national meet is:actually
higher .than the -North
American's. At 1..1. she
skated .as a senior .which
includes all women skaters
over 18. Carla did hher best
skating of the year and
achieved a• personal best in
. the- 1000 -metre race. Kathy
finished fourth overall and
was just hundredths of sec-
onds out of the medals in Wit)
races..
National Raakigg
She obtained national rank-
ing this season by attending a
meet in Calgary in December
where she earned the ranking
of 31 of all women speed -
skaters in Canada. She
missed a second national
ranking meet in March due to
illness and is now -ranked
39th overall.
The North American and
Canadian short track meets
mark the end of the 1996-97
speed -skating season. "Jt -was
kind of a comeback year."
says Hunt'. who fought off ill-
ness that caused asthma late
in the season to finish by suc-
cessfully defending her title.
Carla, also battled back from
a broken ankle in September.
Two of her other children
also speed -skated this season.
Watt and Cayili competed in
the Ontario circuit and each
won a couple of medals and
unproved their personal best
times, says mom.
