PEPPY PERSONALITY
Because of Sadie's outgo-
ing personality it has been
fairly easy for Brian and
Melinda to encourage her to
lead a normal. active life.
Yet they recognize that she
will have to endure the teas-
ing which is a natural part of
childhood. Already there
have been times when her
peers have asked why she's
still in diapers. or when Sadie
has been in tears over not
Icing able to keep up with
her friends because of her
braces.
"She's faster without the
braces. and frequently wants
us to take them off." says
Brian. "hut without them.her
feet turn up and since she has
no feeling in them she could
really hurt herself without
knowing it. There have been
sorne times when she's had
them off and we've found her
feet bleeding without her
being aware of it."
Sadie is clearly not a child
who enjoys being behind in
any way: She's facing anoth-
er surgery early in April dur-
ing which. if there are no
more cysts on her spine from
her December surgery, both
her legs will be broken and
set properly. it will undoubt-
edly be a painful procedure
that most adults would dread
yet Sadie is eager for the
surgery because. "Then
maybe I'll be able to run het -
ter!"
NORMAL LIVES
Sadie's zest for fife will
serve her well. for children
with spina bifida can lead
normal, productive lives as
long as they have been
encouraged (within the limits
of health and safety) to he
independent, participate in
activities with their peers,
and assume responsibility for
their own care.
Even at the age of three
Sadie demonstrates that she
will have no problem taking
care of herself. "it is amaz-
ing to me the way total
strangers will come right up
to us and want to know why
she wears braces," Melinda
comments, "hut Sadie
doesn't hesitate to tell them
that she has spina bifida.

Perhaps she's so confident
because when she was a baby
there was always an adult
entertaining her, talking and
playing with her. Therefore
she developed a vocabulary
well beyond her years. We
haven't been able to spend
the same amount of time with
her little brother Brody and 1
can see the difference
between him and what Sadie
was like at his age."
Even though she was accus-
tomed to exclusive attention,
Sadie welcomed having
another baby in the family.
"She was delrghtcd to get a
little brother," Melinda says
with a smile, "she wants to
have lots more brothers and
sisters and really enjoys play-
ing with other children."
`STAGGERING'
The Tenpas' medical
expenses are staggering with
braces at over $2000, along
with the cost of diapers,
antibiotics, catheters, etc.
"There are government pro-
grams that reimburse a good
percentage of the expenses,"
Brian says, juggling 11 -
month -old Brody on his hip.
"Of course we would spare
no expense to make sure
Sadie gets the help she
needs."
"We're really grateful we
live in Canada," adds
Melinda, "can you imagine
how much the hospital bills
would be if we were in'the
States?"
Even with all the challenges
involved in raising a child
with special needs the Tenpas
are quick to say, "We love
Sadie and would never trade
her for the world. She is so
smart, pretty and loving.
' We've seen so many children
who arc much worse off. We
arc thankful she's as healthy
as she is."
Brian points out, "Spina
bifida is becoming more and
more common; we wanted to
let people become aware of
it."
Although the cause of spina
bifida is not well understood,
recent research has indicated
that the addition of the 13 -vit-
amin folic acid to the dict of
women of child-bearing age
may significantly reduce the
incidence such neural tube
defects.

-yolks, and some fruit and
fruit juices. Essential for the
functioning of the human
body, the need for this vita-
min increases during periods
of rapid growth, such as
pregnancy and fetal develop-
ment. Because many preg-
nancies arc unplanned and
many women don't even
realize they're pregnant for
several weeks, women who
might possibly become preg-
nant should consume 0.4 mg
of folic acid daily, usually
contained in most daily
multi-vitamin supplements.
Melinda strongly supports
this suggestion, stating "it is
just a fluke to have a child
with a birth defect like spina
bifida. It never occurred to
me that there would be any-
thing unusual with my child.
i did all the right things dur-
ing my pregnancy. i ate
properly, i exercised. All
women who want to become
pregnant should make sure
they take folic acid as an
added assurance."
"Is it OK to say i don't
want to have spina bifida?"
Sadie asks her mother. When
her mother nods, Sadie adds,
"I'm lucky. Some kids arc
horn blind, some can't walk
at all, some can't cat or even
breathe by themselves. I'm
one of the lucky ones." .
