Exams to end
first semester
At St. James School last
Monday, a banner congratu-
lating Boyd Devereaux was
hung on the fence, a bulletin
board was made and a "Boyd
Devereaux Hockey Day" was
planned for Wednesday. St.
James was thrilled on
Tuesday when Boyd returned
to visit the students and his
former teachers. Boyd
received a standing ovation
in the gym and was presented
with a St. James sweatshirt, a
certificate and a card signed
by all students and staff.
He told the students to
enjoy their elementary school
years because they are some
of the hest memories of his
lite. Atter visiting all the
classrooms to answer ques-
tions, show his medal, sign
some autographs and have
his picture taken, Boyd was
told about "Boyd Devereaux
Hockey Day" which was to
be held the next day. He
could not attend because he
had to return to school in
Kitchener.
On Wednesday, students
wore hockey sweaters to
show their excitement over
Boyd's success. Eight hock-
ey -related stations, were set
up in the gym. Senior stu-
dents from Grade 7 and 8

• First semester concludes
this week with exams begin-
ning on Friday and ending on
Jan. 22. Advice for students
who write exams:
From Mr. Hastie:
• Don't miss the last class
• Make sure your notes are
in order at the beginning of
your study process.
• Ask questions but don't
ask "what's on the exam?"
• Students should prepare as
if they arc responsible for
everything
• Plan to stay the full time
given to write the exam.
• Be prepared: pens, pen-
cils, calculator etc.
From Mr. Hook:
• Review tests written dur-
ing the semester; exam ques-
tions are often very similar.
Mary Hansen Webb, a kine-
siologist who works in the
area of rehah,ilitation in
Huron County will be a guest
speaker in Mrs. Doig's
3A/3G class.

The Lioness Club treated
residents to a tour of our
town to see the Christmas
lights. They were beautiful.

The skit "Twas the Night
Before Christmas" was espe-
cially enjoyed.'

some great Christmas enter-
tainment for residents. They
Maplewood
even brought Santa along
who proved he can kick up
his heels too.
The Harmony Kings visited
Maplewood to entertain resi-
dents with their favorite
Christmas songs. Their voic-
es were great.
Bill Gibson, Carol Carter,
Marion Rose and Marie
Thomas each made a visit to
lead in a Christmas sing -a-
long with the residents.
Residents were touched by
the thoughtfulness of the
Grade 8 students from
Seaforth Public School.
Stun° tints made a gift for each
resident and made a special
visit to deliver it. Thanks a
lot.
The month ended with a
great New Years Eve party
with lots of good food and
games. We are truly grateful
to those who made Christmas
at Maplewood extra special.
May you all enjoy a happy
and healthy new year.
Grade 2 students spit on corn in class
It was back to school this
past week and many new stu-
dents were welcomed to the
school. Taylor Bennewies,
Missy Smith and Lukas
Biesinger arc the new Early
Year students; Ali Bregman
in Grade 1; Nick Halley.
Justin Biesinger are the new
kids in Grade 2/3; Ashley
Halley and Johsua Biesinger
in Grade 4 and Becky Brown
in Grade 3.
The Early Year children
were quite happy to be back
to school to play and learn.
This week they are working
on a weather unit and they
talked about clouds, and how
the snow comes from the
clouds. Lately they have seen
lots of those snow clouds.
The Grade I class is work-
ing on the passage of time.
They are tracking an amaryl-

lis, seeing how long it takes
to grow and bloom. This
week they also learned how
long it took for ice to freeze
as they made their very color-
ful ice sculptures outside by
the trees.
You may not want to know
what the Grade 2s were doing
this past week. But I will tell
you. They were spitting on
corn. Actually they are doing
a digestive unit in health and
they were doing an experi-
ment called, "Spit and
Demolish". After leaving the
corn overnight they saw the
next day that the corn was
beginning to break down.
They learned such words as
digestion, acid. enzymes and
the proper word for "spit" -
saliva. The kids have learned
