Soviet's suckered the
Canadians out of a medal in
Czechoslovakia.
Regardless, it was great
holiday entertainment and
"Mac" got three goals against
the Poles.
Watt flattened a fellow in
red with a great hit that
turned the tempo of the game
completely around, and in
Canada's favour, in a hig win
over the Russians on the way
to last year's gold medals.
Our local players have
always excelled with the hest
in the world.
NOT UNEXPECTED
Boyd making the national
juniors this Christmas is no
hig surprise. He has earned it.
He is a "character player"
with Canadian toughness,
quiet modesty and an almost
European offensive clan. He
can skate with the hest of
than, and put points on the
hoard. He is a great playmak-
er. Word is he may he shifted
to the wing for this world
tournament.
He was the Edmonton
Oilers first choice, and went
sixth overall, in last stum-
mcr's annual National
Hockey League entry draft.
As of when he left for
• ,Switzerland last Tuesday,
Boyd was fourth in scoring
this season for the major
junior Rangers and their lead-
ing playmakcr. He had 35
points in 26 games, from 13
goals and 22 assists, with 15
minutes in penalties. His
plus/minus was a most
respectable plus 12. - •
-
He has been ars A+ student
since Grade 9. After his rook-
ie season with Kitchener last
spring he was named major
junior hockey's "Scholastic
Player of the Year" at the
Memorial Cup. -
He helped Seaforth minor
teams to -several Ontario
Minor Hockey Association
"CC" titles and Silver Stick
championships, and signed
-with the local junior
Ccntcnaires when he was 14,
playing against players six
and sometimes seven .years
his senior.
He -was a mere wisp with
great hands and desire hack
then. hut he grew.
The St. Marys Lincolns cut
him, so the next two seasons
he played for the junior B
Stratford Cullitons, helping
them to an OHA title.
He is the son of Ken and
Lorraine Devereaux of
Goderich Street East. His
older brother Mike plays for
the University. of Waterloo,
and his sister Kathy is one of
the better junior women play-
ing hockey in this province.
