Morenz race tight
Cents beat Irish but burned by Hawks
Seaforth's Centenaires
played their best game
against a quality opponent so
far this season, beating the
team directly ahead of them
in the standings, the Lucan
Irish 6, by a score of 5-3 in
an important neutral site
Morenz Division engagement
at Ilderton Saturday night.
The night before on the
road also at Exeter, they
dropped a narrow 5-3 deci-
sion to the division -leading
Hawks.
The standings are getting
clogged. Only four points
now separates second from
last in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D"evel-
opment League's toughest
division, where all five con-
tenders are now playing bet-
ter than :500 hockey, with
more wins than losses.
The Cents are now sitting
in third, one point out of sec-
ond but only two up on the
fourth -place Mitchell, who
they play this Sunday night
in Seaforth at 8:30. The local
juniors play twice on home
ice this weekend. They also
host the Lambeth Lancers
Friday night, same time,
same station.
If they play the way they
did Sunday they'll do just
fine.
7 GOALS, 20 MINUTES
The Cents played defence
first, waited for the breaks
then effectively counter -
punched with four third -peri-
od goals in a wild final 20
minutes against the Irish, in
front of a healthy crowd.
Seaforth went up 1-0 mid-
way through the first period
thanks to Jason Hayter's bit
of an off -speed knuckleball.
The score stayed that way
until about five minutes into
the third, when Lucan tied it.
J. C. Kirk connected on a
Seaforth powerplay midway
through the period, then
Shaun Anstett gave the Cents
a two -goal cushion exactly a
minute later. Jason
Henderson and Tim Barton
made it 5-2, before Lucan's
final goal, on a defensive
mental lapse and giveaway;
with only one second left on
the clock.
HAWKS 5 CENTS 3
Occasional defensive lapses
cost the Cents dearly in this
game against the division
leaders, which they could
easily have won.
You could say they got
burned - as just returned vet-
eran forward Nate Burns
notched a hat trick for the
Hawks.
It was 4-1 for Exeter 11
minutes or so into the third
period before Seaforth made
it much more interesting,
with goals by Alan Jeffrey
and Aaron Parsons.
The Centenaires dominated
the late going and could have
tied it a couple of times, but
were a "tich" slow on the
trigger. Exeter ended the sus-
pense with an empty -net
insurance goal with 22 sec-
onds left.
It looked like it might be a
shootout in the first two min-
utes. Tim Barton put the
Cents on the board at :57 sec -

Annual run

Scaforth's Terry Fox Run
could be held on Sunday
afternoons in future.
At the Oct. 29 meeting of
the town's recreation and

Marty Bedard read a letter
from local Pastor Rick Lucas
expressing concerns with the
annual run for cancer
research "as it was in direct
conflict with Sunday morning
church services."

The Hawks' veteran from
Clinton is getting a bit chub-
by these days but has always
been a thorn in Seaforth's
side and certainly still knows
where they net is.
He was the difference in
this match, scoring the three
times after re-signing with
Exeter earlier in the week,
much to the chagrin of the
Clinton senior Radars, who
he had been playing for.
Goaltender Scott Wood was
solid for the Cents in both
weekend starts.
Two Centenaires, Tim
Barton and Parsons, played
for the Stratford Cullitons in
their 6-1 win over Listowel
Sunday night. The Cents and
Stratford junior Bs are affili-
ated.
