First Division next season
Wild weekend wins `Triple Crown' for St. Columban
The country boys did all
right this Western Ontario
Soccer League season.
The St. Columban men's
team completed a rare
"triple" on a busy weekend.
They beat Marconi 2-1 at
St. Columban Friday night to
finish first by a point in
Division Two/Central and
thereby earn promotion to the
First Division next year.
Then they beat two good
squads to win the division
playoff the rest of the week-
end.
Sunday's final went to a
shootout, after 30 minutes of
overtime failed to unravel a
2-2 draw against Forest
United.
A couple of week's ago, the
lads won the League Cup in
London, an honoured annual
intra -mural competition, in
an exciting final after going
undefeated in earlier games.
Opposing players on occa-
sion taunt the locals when
errant crosses behind the
church fly into the cornfields
that border the St. Columban
pitch.
Which makes this season's
"triple" an even sweeter rural
revenge for the St. Columban
team.
Its been about five seasons
since St. Columban was in
the first division.
DRAW IN DARK?
A tie game would have
been no good and put them in
second Friday. Brian Melady
scored on a penalty shot in
the first half to put St.
Columban up by one goal.
But it proved no easy street
as Marconi equalized in the
sec, and darkness and a
possi filed game loomed.
But S iib:rielady got the
winner about five minutes.
from the end of regulation,
and that settled matters. St.
Columban gets promoted,
