• • • • Do You Remember • • • Originally appeared July 6, 1934 When Tuckersmith, or for that matter, the whole of this district was without a physi- cian? Yet it is exactly 100 years ago that Dr. William Chalk settled in Harpurhey - the first physician to arrive in the rapidly growing settle- ment. Dr. Chalk was horn in Lincoln, England, in 1795, the son of Thomas and Anne Chalk. he studied medicine in London under Sir Astley Cooper and was an appren- ticed apothecary. Moving to Manchester about 1820, he married within a few years, Margaret -Heath of montwich, Cheshire. Their only child, Hannah, was horn on June 1, 1823. By Keith McPhail McLean 'After practising in Harpurhey, a suburb of Manchester, for some years Dr. Chalk decided to emi- grate to,Atnerica. The family arrived in New York after spending six weeks on the ocean and came on to the Huron tract via Hamilton by lumber wagon. Arriving in Tuckersmith the pioneer physician chanced upon a log cabin huilt hy a Roman Catholic priest but lately moved to another part of the district. Dr. Chalk purchased two 100 acre farms from the Canada Company which he called Harpurhey and pro- • posed devoting his time to farming. But he soon found that his services as a physi- cian were in so much demand that he was unable to devote any time to farming. Many were the long tiresome miles he travelled through virgin hush to set a pioneer's leg or to help a sick family. Pioneer life of the district centered around the Chalk home and many are the tales told of the good times enjoyed there. Dr. C'halk's only daughter was marrie0 in her 21st year to George Gouinlock, a member of another pioneer Huron fami- ly. Young Gouinlock, who engaged in the potash busi- ness in Harpurhey, died in his 33rd year from pneumonia contracted following a fire in Dr. Chalk's hay stack when he became overheated. As the country became more settled and young doc- tors came to practise, Dr. Chalk decided to retire and as he concluded his life's work, was presented by his friends with a handsome silver tray, pitcher and goblet suitably enscrihed. These are now in possession of the Gouinlock family in Warsaw, N.Y. Dr. Chalk died in June, 1868, in his 73rd year and Mrs. Chalk in June, 1885, aged 91. They both are buried in Harpurhey ceme- tery.
