Open Reception to follow at the Clinton Community Centre at 9 p.m. 12 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, July 24, 1995 Entertainment The play where nothing happens BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Editor What's there to say about a play which has been described as being about nothing? Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot which opened July 7 at Stratford Festival's Tom Patterson Theatre "jettisons everything by which we rec- ognize theatre," wrote English critic Kenneth Tynan. "It arrives at the cus- tomhouse, as it were, with no luggage, no passport, and nothing to declare; yet it gets through, as might a pilgrim from Mars." What happens in this play? Well, two derelictcharacters, Vladimir (Tom McCamus) and Estragon (Stephen Ouimette) pass the time by any means they can - telling stories and jokes, singing, role-playing - while they wait for Godot. And who is Godot? Well, we're not sure. He could be a metaphor for God or, well, who knows... "Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful!" complains Estragon. But a fcw people do show up. Pozzo (James Blendick) and Lucky (Tim MacDonald). Pozzo is the cruel master of Lucky, who is no more than a slave - until he begins to talk or "think out loud." And then it's hard to get him to stop. And what does he talk about? Well, it's hard to explain. It's sort of an echo of the mean- ingless chatter of life and the- ories on how we are like we are and other ambiguous things that I'm being ambigu- ous about. The play deals with or doesn't deal with the mean- ingless or meaning in life. But there's a lot to be drawn from Waiting for Godot about the frivolousness of life and how we while away our time. All of the cast docs a great job doing whatever they do. Successful lawn bowling The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club held another successful tournament on Sunday, July 21.
