McElwain enters tenth NHL season
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Editor
Seaforth native Dave
McLlwain will begin his
tenth NHL season playing for
a team the second time in his
career.
The 29 -year-old forward
signed the final paperwork on
Thursday for a one-year con-
tract with the New York
Islanders, a team he played
with for part of the I992-93
season when he jumped from
division to division in trade
deals.
He's looking forward .to
playing with the Islanders
who have a lot of new faces
in management and on the
bench since Dave was. in
Long Island.
McLlwain said he would
probably he used as a penalty
killer but a definite role
wasn't spelled out in his brief
dealings with the team.
"I think I can chip in on
both ends of the ice and not
just be known as a defensive
forward," said Davc, who
might he playing centre or
left wing.
As far as his NHL career is
going, he's "just taking it a
year at a time."
"With a one-year deal
you've got to play hungry.
You've got to keep working
for the next year. Sure it
would he nice to sign a four-
year deal but not many guys
get those," he said. .
Across town, the Great One
_ Dave McLlwain
signed a two-year, $K -million
dollar deal with the New
York Rangers, reuniting him
with former Oiler Mark
Messier.
- "It's the old Edmonton
Oilers again. They just
changed cities," said
McLlwain.
"Obviously his buddy and
former teammate had a lot to
do with getting him there."
McLlwain said many
thought Gretzky. had .a sub-
par year but even though he
scored a career -low 23 goals
Iast season he also chalked up
79 assists to finish number 12.
in league scoring with -102
points. -
"That's a good career for
most guys."
Davc said Gretzky's leader-
ship and. all-around abilities
will help the Rangers.
"He;s classified as a winner.
I feel he can still play."

McLlwain's annual hockey
school is scheduled for the
last two weeks in August at
the Seaforth and District
Community Centres.
"Hockey school is ready to
go. There's still room for
kids," said Dave, who will be
there to instruct the young
hockey players before he has •
to report to training camp
after Labour Day in early
September.
Dave's former Seaforth
neighbour and NHL linesman
Scott Driscoll, who normally
helps out at the hockey
school, won't be able to this
year because he's officiating
at the World Cup hockey
tournament.
"We'll miss him. 1 know
the kids like working with
him," said McLlwain.
. Seaforth Oilers
What about the chance of
Dave facing one of the three
Seaforth area players picked
up by the Edmonton Oilers
organization in recent years -
Rem Murray, Mike Watt and
Boyd Devereaux - if they're
called up this season?
"They have a young team.
They've moved a couple
guys to make room for some-
body. Rem put up some good
numbers last year. -With the
year under his belt I'm sure it
helped. Mike or Boyd could
step in depending on what
their situation is. With all the
college rules, I'm not sure
what Mike's status is. But
I'm sure any one of them
could play. If you have a".

good camp and impress them

Dave says it's great to see
someone from his hometown
place high in the NHL draft
as Boyd Devereaux did,
going sixth overall.
"He mentioned that's the
easy part, being drafted. Now
there's a lot of work ahead of
him. It's a lot of fun. I wish
him all the best. Obviously
he's got a lot of talent to be
going that high in the draft."
Playoff Disappointment
Unfortunately for Dave,
after being called up to play
for the Pittsburgh Penguins,
the team he began his NHL
career with, just before last
season's playoffs, the Pens
were ousted in the semi-
finals by the underdog
Florida Panthers who faced
the mighty Colorado
Avalanche in the Stanley Cup
final and were swept in four
straight games. •
"Those chances don't come
around that often - to be part
of a team of that calibre. We
had them three games to two
and then ended up losing at
home. It was really disap-
pointing."
As far as this season goes
for.Dave, he'd love to see the
Islanders make the playoffs.
"That would he a real goal
to take a team that's missed
the playoffs for a couple of
years and he part of it. Once
you get to the playoffs you
never know what happens."
