The Huron Expositor, 1996-07-17, Page 1414-THI NU/110N IXPO$IYOf, July 17, 1 MIS Entertainment All the world's a stage...and nobody dies Naked swimmer BY DAVID SCOTT Expositor Editor If you want to see a Shakespeare play with love, action and laughs, where everybody doesn't die in the end, As You Like It is for you. Aside from regular dramat- ic -action, this play features some live on-stage sports including badminton and cro- quet. But most spectacular of all is an amazing well -chore- ographed wrestling match with an opponent being lifted above the head of another and other assorted rolls and moves. The plot involves two sets of quarreling brothers. One Duke banishes his brother Duke (John Gilbert plays both roles) to the Forest of Arden. One brother Oliver (Tom Barnett), who inherited his father's estate, doesn't want to give anything to his younger brother Orlando. Orlando (Jonathan Crombie) wrestles at the Duke's court and is expected to lose against champion Charles (Dominic •Fumusa). Oliver is hoping his brother will. be maimed or killed. Orlando is victorious and he captures the heart of Rosalind -(Kristina Nicholl), daughter of the banished Duke. She, too, is banished to the Forest of Arden and is joined by cousin Celia (Tamara Bernier). The forest is beginning to get crowded as the melancholy philoso- pher Jaques (David Jansen) finds refuge there along with Touch§tone (Kevin Bundy), the court fool, and an assort- ment of other characters. who criss-cross paths and are entangled in romantic rela- tionships. The whole thing is sorted ;out by the end of the play when several weddings simultaneously take place. Most of the actors in this play are cast in double roles and to make things more con- fusing, the cast of four women change roles from performance to performance. And to add more duality Rosalind disguises herself as a man, Ganymede, to test the love of Orlando. Last Wednesday, the cast had to turn around and switch roles from a matinee to an evening performance. When Dr. Brian Baker was my mentor during my early medical education, I never dreamed that one day I would try to follow his "big footsteps." His caring, commitment and responsibility to his patients provide an exemplary model of the "family physician." As Dr. Baker plans to begin his well deserved retirement from full- time practice on September 2nd, I look forward to serving you and your family with a similar dedication as your new family physician. My care for you and your family will include the provision of anaesthesia and obstetrical care. they remember who they are from day to day. There's a lot of priceless lines in this play including the famous, "All the world's a, stage" speech from philoso- pher Jaques. The casting for As You Like It is excellent. All the roles are played with passion and vigour with strong comic per- formances from Bundy as Touchstone, Fumusa as wrestling brute Charles and bumpkin William, Oliver Dennis as sheep herder and amateur philosopher Corin and Colin O'Meara as lovesick shepherd Silvius. The leads are all strongly played with sufficient melan- choly injected into this come- dy by Jansen as Jacques. As You Like It has a lot of still relevant information about relationships between men and women, some of which are summed up in a humourous epilogue. Stratford Festival's produc- tion of As You Like It runs at the Tom Patterson Theatre until September 14. GRADUATION Shawna McCall, graduated June 13, 1996 from the Tourism and Hospitality Division at Fanshawe College. She is the daughter of Murray and Sherry McCall of Walton.
