Western Ontario Soccer
St. Columban
rules the roost
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
St. Columban's men's team
is -all alone on top of the
table, unbeaten in 13 games
after a pair of weekend wins
in Western Ontario soccer.
They hammered the roar
out of the Lion Kings 3-0
Sunday evening in London,
after edging the Exeter
Centennials 1-0 Friday night
at St. Columban in an excel-
lent match, on a fine summer
night for soccer.
- - It was a close encounter of
the disputed kind..
St. Columban now sports -a
record .of eight wins, one loss
and two draws in Division
- Two/Central of the league,
which does not include their
two triumphs this season in
Cup play. They have scored
29 goals .and given up 16 in
the league, and as of this
• moment are two points up on
London Marconi in second
place. •
The local lads lost their first
game of this season against
London Scottish, but have
Neaten -everybody since
exccpt lowly Nairn (in their
second start) and more
recently current runners -Alp
- Marconi, whom they haith
drew with. .•
- 0 GOALS IN 3 GAMES
Keeper Jason Dietz has
been. both stingy and -stellar
so far this season. He didn't
allow a. goal in this week-
end's action, so now has
given up none ,in three -
straight games,
There was no question, he
was. certainly the star of the
show for the_ final 20 min-
utes or so of Friday's night's
game, when Exeter was all
over the locals in their own
end, drove a shot into the
'side of the net.and hit the
crossbar, among other excite-
-merits.
But the. veteran St,
Columban goalkeeper also
caught, smothered or confi-
dently fisted away some
other excellent Exeter
chances. - .
. Sb a disputed goal by Brian
Melady, early in- the second
half, -stood as the winner.
The goal came on a second
St: Columban corner kick at
about the 13th minute of the
second, aftcr thc ref ruled the
first had been improperly
played by the Centennials.
Getting better
Seaforth businessman and
sporting enthusiast,Trent
Ward is out of intensive care,
aftcr a lengthy stay of about
90 days, and is now in a reg-
ular room recuperating in a
London hospital.
Late last winter he•uncx-
pectedly became seriously ill
shortly aftcr the hockey sea-
son, when he was equipment
manager for the Seaforth
Centcnaires. He is usually
also involved with minor hall
in the Winthrop area at this
time of year.
The Wards, who live in
McKillop Township in the
Dublin arca, run 2nd Period
Sports on Seaforth's Main
Street.
Trent is now on the fifth
floor of old Victoria hospital
and can.receivc visitors.
Seaforth, and Bayfield wish-
es to apply some kind of user
fee, it should be up to them to
approach those involved and
do their own collecting.
In any case, recreation
director Marty Bedard said
only two of thc five were
-actually from Seaforth and
the other three were from
adjacent townships.
The ball ended up ate
Melady's feet in the middle
while he was falling to the
pitch, so he seized the
moment by somehow tapping
it over the line past a sur-
prised Exeter goalkeeper and
defence.
"Surprised" is perhaps
putting -it mildly, which soon
turned to much Exeter protest
at Melady's touch, becausc
they were sure they saw a
hand hall to begin with.
The referee saw it other-
wise in the confusion.
STRIKE OF AGES
And the unbeaten string
was intact for Sunday night's
next game in London.
It was again 0-0 at the half
against the Lion Kings.
St. Columban's three goals
were then scored by Steve
Ryan, Mike Seiler and
Melady, again.
This goal was one for the
hooks, highlight film stuff,
by accounts from those who
saw it.
Brian, when prompted,
describes it as "a seven -foot
bicycle kick from the 18." the
hest he's ever Nagged, so
good the referee came over to
shake the striker's hand after
and say it was one of the hest
he also had ever seen.
"A Kodak moment."
- Melady is also coach of the
St. Columban squad, and

Marion misses cut by whisker
Chris Marion of Seaforth
made thc first 'cut after two
rounds, but missed the sec-
ond by two shots after three
rounds, at last week's Ontario
junior men's golf champi-
onship at Hamilton.
The local 18 -year-old fired
rounds of 80, 83 and 81, fin-
ishing in thc low 50s in a
field of 150.
The final cut reduced the
field to 42 for the final
round's play in thc tourna-
ment, won by one stroke by
John Mills from the Bay of
Quinte with a four -round
total of 301. s
It was the second summer
in a row Marion has golfed
well enough to earn a berth in
the provincial championship.
He says he golfed better last
year, when he finished 23rd
in the field and made the
junior team which represent-
ed Ontario later last summer
in a tournament in
Philadelphia.
Marion, who also works at
thc Seaforth Golf and
Country Club, says he had
been gunning for a top 10, or
at least top 20, finish this
time around at the Ontario
junior but his game just
wasn't in proper gear.
It certainly was a couple of
weeks ago though, when
Chris finished third overall in
the Tyson mini -tour at three
London golf courses with
rounds of 73 at River Road
(one over par), 73 at Thames
Valley and 75 at Fanshawe
(both rounds three over).

No dice!
At last -Tuesday night's
regular meeting, council was"
unanimous quickly rejecting
a request by Bayfield to pay
,5662.88 for "five children
from Seaforth" who use that
village's arena.
Bayfield council says they
subsidize children using their
arena by about $35 an hour.
and "all municipalities who
have children using the
Bayfield Arena are being
asked to contribute."
The five -played girls' hock-
ey last winter.
"This makes no sense."
Deputy -Reeve Bill Teal! said.
Council agreed and com-
mented the same logic could
be applied the other way
around, but isn't. Consensus
was that if young athletes
