New street names suggested
Seaforth Council recom-
mends the names of two
streets in town be changed,
because of emergency 9-1-1
system concerns.
Public meetings are still
required.
Council suggests North
Street's ( off Main ) name be
changed to Cardno Street, in
honor of Seaforth's first
woman mayor. There is only
one house on thc street. Two
on the corner are actually on
Main. •
There is also a street
between Elizabeth and
Railway, with no house on it,
now called William that
'council thinks should be re-
named McLean Street, in
honor of both M.Y. and A.Y.'
McLean, the first MP from.
Seaforth and MPP and civic
leader, respectively. The
McLeans also owned and
published The Huron
Expositor for many years.
There are other North and
William Streets in town with
the potential to confuse in
emergencies.
Duplex planned
Owner John Maloney plans
a duplex for his property at
•the corner of Coleman and
George Street East in
Seaforth, where a long -aban-
doned house was torn down
late last year. The building
inspector's March report says
this duplex (Lcit 119,Plan
393) is valued at $120,600.
An 18 -year-old Kitchener
man who crashed into a
guardrail in.Goderich after a'
high-speed pursuit, and then'
escaped from under guard at
the local hospital, was sen-
tenced Monday to 10 months
in jail.
"Your driving on the night
in question, sir, was horren-
dous," said Provincial Court
Judge Garry Hunter.
"Particularly the speeds at
which you drove through
small towns and villages."
Kirk. R. Bowers pleaded
guilty to -possession of stolen
property, dangerous driving,
escaping from custody and
failing to comply with recog-
nition conditions in relation to
unrelated charges (among
those, conditions were that he
keep the peace and "be of
good behaviour").
Bowers was charged Apr.
22, after a police pursuit that
started just outside Stratford.
Acting Crown Attorney
W.J.M. Egener told the court
the car Bowers was driving
had been reported stolen from
the Waterloo arca Apr. 21.
The next day, police saw the
car driving west out of
Stratford. Bowers refused to
pull over when police sig-
nalled him, instead speeding
up to 177 km/hr in an 80
km/hr lone. In Sebringville,
where the limit is 50 km/hr, he
was travelling at 180 km/hr.
As he went through
Mitchell, the car's headlights
went out, and stayed out for
some time afterwards, Egener
said. At about that time, thc
officers halted the pursuit
because they felt the speed at
which both vehicles were
moving was too high.
Local OPP officers caught
up with Bowers as he contin-
ued through Scaforth and
Clinton, travelling at about
160km/hr (speed limits in
both towns arc 50 km/hr).
He came into Goderich on
Hwy. 8, and as he turned onto
Elgin Avenue, he failed to
negotiate the curve in the road
and crashed into the guard rail
on the north side of the road.
Duty counsel Tim
Macdonald said there
appeared to be something
wrong with the car's electrical
system; Bowers did not turn
the headlights out on purpose
to elude police. However,
Macdonald added, Bowers did
know the car was stolen.
After thc accident, Bowers
was taken to Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital.

Wild ride results in 10 -month sentence
under observation for 24
hours, and a civilian guard
was brought in. Bowers went
Outside for a smoke and never
came back.
Macdonald pointed out that
Bowers had asked the guard
to remove his handcuffs,
which the guard did. The OPP
Canine Unit found Bowers
hiding in a' residence in
Saltford.
Macdonald recommended a
"short, sharp sentence" for
Bowers, who has been in cus-
tody two weeks since being
re -arrested.
