Future bleak for some WOAA centres
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL.
Expositor Stair
Minor hockey runs the risk of
turning into a "rut -league" in
some Huron -Perth towns and
villages with the coming of
-triple A.
• Triple A works well in the
cities but it's going to snake it
"uneven" for minor hockey
here predicts Western Ontario
Athletic Association "CC" co-
ordinator Rick Vivian of
Mitchell.
He has held that position for
at (east "the last 15 years" and
was Mitchell's Citizen of the
Year in 1994.
Vivian says sonic places
Huron -Perth may be, left with
only House League hockey
when the dust has cleared.
"You're going to take one,
two or three players from each
centre, lower the calibre of
their hockey and come to the
point where some of• these
centres. can't field teams,"
Vivian says.
"We've worked hard to build
a minor system that we can be
proud of. And then to get some
guy coming in off .the street
and saying: 'We're going to
start triple A now and we want
all your best players?
"I'll work with the kids that
come out to play ("CC"") and
we'll see what we can do,"
Triple A approved by OMHA
The Ontario Minor Hockey
Association approved triple A
hoxxkey for Huron -Perth last
week, conditional upon the new
group tiling a constitution,
bylaws and budget.

to the public.
Const. Akcy says spring -
evaluations will be held at the
arena in Clinton and Seaforth
(bantam, midget)_ and that will
give organizers a clearer pic-
ture of where they stand.
Hc says registration has been
tentatively set at $600, but
fundraising might reduce this.
Vivian says. "But I just don't
like seeing systems ruined
because of it, and I don't like
the kids getting ruined by it
either.
"Kids and parents can't make
up their minds and they don't
know what to do."
Vivian says he has posted
their organizational bulletins at
the Mitchell arena, where he is
manager, and is not trying to
discourage triple A hockey but
he's not trying to boost it
either because he doesn't feel it
is "proper, particularly for
atoms and peewees and maybe
bantams."
He thinks players are old
enough to make up their own
minds by midget, al age 16.
The WOAA .zone co-or-
dinator hopes triple A
recruiters "leave players alone
at least unljl the end of this
season when playoffs are done"
for their late -spring tryouts.
He also thinks organizers have
been less than forthright -about
-the costs of triple A for would-
be players and their parents:
"$600 is the tip of the iceberg"
when you .also factor con-
siderations such as added travel
expenses, he says.
He also takes issue with
claims by "AAA" that, as it
stands, "CC" players don't get
scouted by the scouts from
junior.
"Well that's just absolutely
ludicrous," Vivian says.
."Where have all these players
come from for the last how
many years?"

Noise • A Hazard To
Your Hearing Health
Q. I've been hearing a lot
about "noise pollution" lately.
Exactly what is it? Can it cause
problems with hearing?
A. Like other types of pollution
(air, water, etc.), noise pol-
lution involves releasing exces-
sive contaminants - in this case
loud sounds - into our environ-
ment. Our modern society is a
very noisy one. We experience
loud noise practically
everywhere - at our jobs, in our
-entertainment and, recreation,
even in our homes.
And yes, noise pollution can
definitely affect your hearing:.
Any loud noise - an explosion,
a jet plane taking off, the clat-
ter of industrial machinery -
puts stress on the delicate "hair
cells" of the inner ear.
Prolonged exposure can even-
tually damage or destroy these
cells, resulting in a permanent
hearing loss.
This often happens to people
who work around loud noises
and do not . wear hearing
protection. This could include
airport employees, punch press
operators, riveters, jackhammer
operators, etc. Forty-six per
cent of workers in high noise
level jobs have hearing
problems. That's almost halt!
Noise is no laughing matter.
It's a serious hazard to your
hearing.
