EVERYBODY'S DOIN' IT
SHATTERING ICE MYTHS
by Craig Nicholson • -
(E1995 by Craig Nicholson. All rights reserved.)
About half of all snowmobiling fatalities happen on ice. Some are from call -
tions with fixed objects like docks. rocks. pressure ridges or ice huts. But
most are from drowning.. - • Crashing suddenly through ice intefrigid.water is.e scary thought. Equallyfrightening are prevalent myths. that make -too many riders complacent aboutthe risks of ice travel. ""I've Lived Here All My Life" - So that makes it a good place to die prema-
turely? Familiarity breeds contempt. Last winter three young adults drown inone tragic incident. As cottagers. they were raised in the area and had trav-
elled that lake hundreds of times. as recently. as earlier that week and dohesome ice fishing too. But a different combination of elements opened wateraround -an abnOrmal preSSure crack and -much to the shock of every long-
time resident, it wat game over."I. Know This Lake Like The Back of My Hand -1- My own cottage is on asmall lake where you can't lose sight of Shore. One night. I took some guestsout for a short tour. Blowing snow soon started. disorienting .me from myusual Markers. After a brief panic. I found the shore and-fello,wed it homeWe were lucky that night. but the disaster potential was that the others wouldhave followed my lost self anywhere. Similarly. our lake hasn't had a pres-
sure crack in 30 years. but last winter a 'neighbour proke her wrist hittingone. You can neve! be toO sure."What Goes DoWn Must Corne Up" - Many snowmobilers have a false visionabout going through the ice. They see a hole and a person in it. But considerseveral chilling facts: often drowning occurS when a rider hits open water athigh speed. How far from the ice edge "does that moving sled carry you'?, What damage occurs when you hit water too hard? When you sink. how do.You know which way is up? If you do surface. which way is safety? How longcan you tread water? Hope that no other speeding snowmobiles follow youin. because odds are good that one will crunch your head as it comes up forEven if you do break through ice. your tralectory will probably be•at an angleaway from the entry hole. Pray that there's no current to sweep -you away to-i'm Strong Enough To Get Out By Myself - Maybe. if you don't panic whenyour helmet fills with ice water or when yOur bogy's involuntary shock gaspwaterlogs your lungs or when you don't know which end is up. Don't .under-
estimate the weight of soaked snow gear: Cold will sap your muscle power.faster than you ever imagined. Strong or not; you've got less than a minutebefore you start to lose.d. Lett winter. a strong man drowned in lest than five

'My Buddies Will Help Me- - Don't count on it. They may go In too. or worse.
not even miss you in the dark. They may not have res6ue tools. Or they, may
be too scared or panicky to act fast enough. Going for help will likely take too
long.
"Emergency Personnel Will Rescue Me' - Often. local police. fire fighters
and ambulance drivers are not trained in ice rescue. Without it, they are fre-
quently forbidden to help, for safety and liability reasons. With cutbacks. their
availability is restricted. Besides. most ice tragedies don't happen close to
such assistance. You're on your own.
'My Buoyant Suit Will Save Me' - There's no doubt floatation will help. but it
won't' get you out of the water. So unless there's help, you're still on your
own. You may not drown. but if you can't get out (and it's not easy).
hypothermia will likely kill you. At least your corpse will be bobbing for easy
retrieval.
111 Be Safe When I Get Our - Not. Unless you can warm your body core
quickly. hypothermia will kill you.
I scared mysell writing this column. I hope it shattered your misconceptions
too. Maybe we'll lose a few less this winter. Until next time. happy trails and
