IMPROVING LOCAL SPORTS COVERAGE The Huron Expositor continues to experiment with a scoreboard format for local sports coverage. We arc faced with a dilemma covering minor sport. Sport has always been very popular and successful in this area, but if all of our local teams were to submit detailed game reports it would leave little space for anything else in our newspaper. Readership surveys tell us many people feel we already have too much sports in our paper. But for others, sports is all they care to read. Another factor to be considered is the soaring cost of newsprint. Paper is not cheap and we use a lot of it in this business. Like any other business in this day and age, costs must be controlled for us to survive and thrive. Sport is particularly important for the young, who these days arc ignoring newspapers in droves for the glamour of other media. These are our readers of the future and we must become relevant to them to survive. It is felt that a scoreboard format best balances increased coverage with our space limitations. Easy to fill out game sheets for all' minor sports are available at our office and at the Seaforth and District Community Centres, and we actively will continue pursue up to date game sheets from team managers. Old news is not news. We urge managers filling out game sheets or scoreboard reports to hand this week's results, win or lose, by Mondays at noon, because our typsetter only works specific hours. We also urge those filling in reports to print clearly, for facts and names properly spelled arc the essence of all news, sports or otherwise. We also welcome any constructive suggestions or comments. Call Gregor or Dave at 527-0273. Hockey SEAFORTH & DISTRICT MINOR HOCKEY ASSOC. The veteran forward was recently released by the Ottawa Senators and is now with the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League. The Lumberjacks are the top farm team of the Pittsburg Penguins, ironically the NHL team that first drafted Dave out of junior. He scored a goal and two assists for Cleveland in their IHL game against Cincinnati Saturday. McLlwain, 28, has played for six NHL clubs in eight seasons, accumulating 97 goals and 198 points. Eight players were picked up in the annual waiver draft, which observers described as "uneventful", the foremost being former Montreal Canadiens' captain Guy Carbonneau. He went from the St. Louis Blues to the Dallas Stars where he will be re- united with former teammate Bob Gainey, now coach of the Stars. Hiltz. hot at WOSSA golf Dave Hiltz of Clinton finished in a three-way tie for first place by shooting a 76 at last Friday's WOSSA golf championship at the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club. Hiltz, who works and plays at the Seaforth club, represented Clinton high school, and finished on top tied with a pair of golfers from St. Thomas and Tillsonburg. NEW IN OUR BAKE SHOP!
