IMPROVING LOCAL SPORTS COVERAGE
The Huron Expositor continues to experiment with a
scoreboard format for local sports coverage.
We arc faced with a dilemma covering minor sport.
Sport has always been very popular and successful in
this area, but if all of our local teams were to submit
detailed game reports it would leave little space for
anything else in our newspaper. Readership surveys tell
us many people feel we already have too much sports in
our paper. But for others, sports is all they care to read.
Another factor to be considered is the soaring cost of
newsprint. Paper is not cheap and we use a lot of it in
this business. Like any other business in this day and
age, costs must be controlled for us to survive and
thrive.
Sport is particularly important for the young, who
these days arc ignoring newspapers in droves for the
glamour of other media. These are our readers of the
future and we must become relevant to them to survive.
It is felt that a scoreboard format best balances
increased coverage with our space limitations.
Easy to fill out game sheets for all' minor sports are
available at our office and at the Seaforth and District
Community Centres, and we actively will continue
pursue up to date game sheets from team managers.
Old news is not news.
We urge managers filling out game sheets or
scoreboard reports to hand this week's results, win or
lose, by Mondays at noon, because our typsetter only
works specific hours. We also urge those filling in
reports to print clearly, for facts and names properly
spelled arc the essence of all news, sports or otherwise.
We also welcome any constructive suggestions or
comments.

McElwain in IHL
Eight players were selected in
Monday's National Hockey
League waiver draft but
Seaforth's Dave McLlwain was
not among them.
The veteran forward was
recently released by the Ottawa
Senators and is now with the
Cleveland Lumberjacks of the
International Hockey League.
The Lumberjacks are the top
farm team of the Pittsburg
Penguins, ironically the NHL
team that first drafted Dave out
of junior.
He scored a goal and two
assists for Cleveland in their
IHL game against Cincinnati
Saturday.
McLlwain, 28, has played for
six NHL clubs in eight seasons,
accumulating 97 goals and 198
points.
Eight players were picked up
in the annual waiver draft,
which observers described as
"uneventful", the foremost
being former Montreal
Canadiens' captain Guy
Carbonneau. He went from the
St. Louis Blues to the Dallas
Stars where he will be re-
united with former teammate
Bob Gainey, now coach of the
Stars.

Health Council
Recruitment
For New Council/Committee Members
The Huron Perth District Health Council (HPDHC) is recruit-
ing new candidates to fill volunteer positions on the Council
and its committees. The HPDHC is responsible for the plan-
ning and coordination of health care services in Huron and
Perth. The HPDHC advises the Minister of Health regarding
health needs and the allocation of health resources for effec-
tive and economic delivery of health services.
The HPDHC serves the Counties of Huron and Perth and is
currently seeking applicants for one position on the 20 mem-
ber Council. Candidates must work and/or live in Huron
County.
The HPDHC also seeks applicants from across the
Huron/Perth district to serve on planning committees.
Through committee work we address issues in areas such as:
acute care; chronic care; long term care; supportive housing,
mental health; health promotion; addiction services; emer-
gency services.
Coundl and committee positions will provide individuals with
an opportunity to team about and work on issues affecting
both the local and provincial health services system.
Interestedapplicants should have a genuine interest in plan-
ning and co-ordinating health services; good communication
and problem solving skills; and demonstrated sound judge-
ment. You should be able to devote approximately 10-20
hours per month to the position, and must live and/or work
in the Huron/Perth District.
Appointment to the Council would begin on May 10, 1996
and is made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council for an
initial term of one to three years. Committee work could
begin earlier as appointment by the Lieutenant Governor is
not required and positions will be filled on an as needed basis.
The HPDHC is interested in individuals who provide a com-
munity perspective and reflect the diversity of the local popu-
lation.
Interested candidates are invited to submit an application or
letter of interest and a brief summary of volunteer and work
experience by Wednesday, October 18,1995 to:
