Cents beat Lakers but nipped by Lancers
The Seaforth Centenaires
took off on the right foot, but
then stumbled the first
weekend of their regular
season.
They opened Friday night by
tripping the Port Stanley
Lakers, who have been to the
Ontario Hockey Association's
Junior "D"evelopment League
final for the past two. seasons,
5-4 in front of a healthy crowd
in their home opener at the
Seaforth and District Com-
munity Centres. But Saturday
night at Lambeth the Cents
weren't firing on all cylinders
and were shaded 4-3 in the
Lancers' home opener.
In Seaforth's final pre -season
exhibition game last Wednes-
day the locals chalked up a 6-2
win at Tavistock against the
Braves.
The Centenaires get
Thanksgiving weekend off after
travelling to Lucan tonight
(Wednesday) for an 8:15 start
against the Irish 6, the team
that swept them in the first
round of the playoffs last
spring.
Burford is in town a week
from this Friday at 8:30 p.m.
for Seaforth's next home game.
"I have mixed feelings about
our opening weekend," says
Cents co-head coach Dave
Murray. "We played a good
game Friday, Our powerplay
was good and we showed
discipline and heart getting the
lead back after Port came back
to tie us 3-3 early in the third
period.
"But Saturday night, our
fourth time on the ice in five
days, we had our chances but
came out flat, particularly
mentally. This was both the
players and.coaches fault.
"Lambeth is a scrappy, not a
fancy team, they keep coming
at you."
Assistant coach Dave Akey
summed up Saturday night's
effort with a terse: " You can't
win hockey games by only
playing 15 minutes.
TOO 1 1'TTLE, TOO LATE
Seaforut h.,d a strong third
period but it wasn't enough to
overcome the Lancers' lead.
Former Exeter Hawks' goal -
tender Chris Lyndon made his
first . start for Seaforth after
signing Friday. Andrew ScoU,
Jason Henderson and Jason
Dunseith scored for the Cen-
tenaires.
GOOD GAME
Seaforth led 3-1 after the
second period but the Lakers
knotted the score by the 7:38
mark of the third, in an enter-
taining tilt featuring two good
teams. Scott Wright, Brandon
Corriveau, Shawn Anstett, Tim
Barton and Henderson scored
for the local juniors. Scott
Wood of the Seaforth midgets
played a strong game as an
affiliate between the local
pipes.
FINAL EXHIBITION
Henderson, Scott, Dunseith,
Chad McCallurn, Brent Hulley
and J.C. Kirk scored for the
Cents, who finished their pre-
season schedule at Tavistock
with a record of four wins and
one loss. It was a scoreless
first period but the Centenaires
led 3-2 after the second period.
Nutley 's shorthanded goal early
in the third period was a tur-
ning point.
Seaforth co -head -coach Jim
Campbell was at a coaching
clinic on the weekend.
The Centenmaires signed
some additional players last
week:
- Wayne Schoonderwoerd, 19,
Dublin, defence, did not play
1994-95.
- Scott Wright, 19, Clinton,
defence, Cents 94-95.
- Mike Stephenson, 17, Lon-
don, goaltender, Import, Lon-
don midget Rk bels "AA".
- Chris Lyndon, 19, Goderich,
goaltender, not protected and
therefore released by Exeter
Hawks last December.
Newly signed Jeff Sauve is
17 years -old, not '19, as
reported in last week's paper.
Former Centenaires' goal -
tender Dave Nahrgang, 19, of
Clinton was released Friday to
the Exeter Hawks in a three-
way deal for considerable cash,
that . also involved the Port

YOU FIGURE THIS ONE OUT - Port Stanley Lakers goaltender Brad Jowarski's stick soars one way and one of his
defencemen guards his crease, but we can't figure out where Brad's head went in this action photo taken during the third
period of Friday night's home opener for the Centenaires at the Seaforth and District Community Centres. The Cents beat
the league championship finalists for the past two seasons by a score of 5-4. But the next night of their opening weekend
they lost 4-3 to the Lancers at Lambeth.

They only had three weeks to
get into shape but the Seaforth
District High School's tennis
team made an impressive
showing, at the Huron -Perth
tennis toumament at the
Stratford Tennis Club on
September 26.
"Most of the teams got into
second round. We came within
two points of winning the
entire Huron -Perth
(competition)," said coach John
Ball.
The 16 Seaforth players
competing played over 208
games of tennis in one day.
On an interesting note,
Seaforth's mixed doubles teilms
finished in the top two spots
and pad to battle it out for the
Huron -Perth gold medal. The
Team of Christa Leonhardt and
Scan Ludwig ended up winning
over Brian Bachert and Carly
Price.
Unfortunately Bachert has a
back injury and won't be able
to advance to the WOSSA
competition on October 11 at
the London Optimist Club. The
high school will send one
mixed doubles team and the
ladies double team of Christa
Bennett and Cara Spittal.
"I have to give them (the
tennis team) a lot of credit.
They had to practice at night.
Many of them have part -tune
jobs. A lot of them are senior
students with a heavy work-
load. And they only had three
weeks to get everything
together," said Ball

In last week's story on the
life membership recently
awarded Joyce McClure by the
Western Ontario Athletic As-
sociation it was incorrectly
stated she was only the second
recipient. She is the fifth, but
now only the second "living"
life member, the other being
Hugh Hodges of Clinton. The
three founding fathers of the
area athletic association have
also earned WOAA life mem-
berships. They were Wilfred
"Doc" Cruickshank, M.L.
(Tory) Gregg and Alfred Lock -
ridge.
McClure will be formally
honored with a presentation
from WOAA on Oct. 12 at
Wingham.
