Designer offers one -of -a -kind creations
BY DAVID SCOTT
Expositor Editor
If you've been saving your
mother's wedding dress in
hopes of wearing it down the
aisle one day, Andrea Grainger
can probably help fulfil your
dream.
Grainger, a designer with
over 20 years experience in set
and costume design, opened "A
Fine Romance" at the corner of
Main and Goderich Streets in
Seaforth on September 26.
The store deals in small
antiques and antique vintage
jewellery but the speciality of
Grainger, owner and designer,
is one -of -a -kind accessories,
unique wedding gowns and
ensembles for special occasions
that incorporate vintage fabrics
and trims.
"Brides are encouraged to
bring in fabrics or trims from
their mothers or grandmothers
gowns, to be re -worked into
their own dresses," says
Grainger in a press release.
She has an impressive list of
design credits in the world of
Canadian theatre and arts.
Grainger worked with the
Canadian Opt ra Company,
Charlottetown Festival and
Canadian Broadcasting Corpor-
ation, where she designed the
clothes for such varied produc-
tions as "The Tommy Hunter
Show," "Rock Wars," and the
Royal Gala of 1984 at Roy
Thompson Hall.
Grainger also worked for
many years with the National
Ballet and the Stratford Festi-
val, where she was associate
costume designer for this
season's successful production
of "Amadeus."
Grainger and her husband
David have lived in Seaforth
for over a year and have lived
in the Stratford area for the last
ten years.
This is her first store and
according to the designer it's
"something I've always wanted
to do."
The Graingers have always
been attracted to Seaforth's
historic Main Street and often
took a detour down it on the
way to Goderich to view our
unique architecture.
"The town should really be
proud of it's heritage and work
to preserve it. It's an incredible
legacy to have here," .1• said.
Her store is located in the
historic site of the former
Carmichael's Hotel and carries
a hint of nostalgia from past
eras.
"Any style of wedding gown
can be custom-made," says •
Grainger in a press release.
"But the shop will eventually
carry its own line of individ-
ually -designed bodices and

jackets that can be combined
with any style of skirt to create
an outfit that can be worn
again and again after the wed-
ding."
The idea of functional clothes
to wear after a wedding applies
to both brides and bridesmaids,
according to the Seaforth
designer.
Aside from designing unique
women's clothing, Grainger
also makes hats, head-dresses
and hand bags, evening and
wedding bags.
"Although we don't sell
shoes, I do decorate them (for
weddings)," she adds.
Grainger can restore an old
wedding dress or use pieces for
an old dress to incorporate into
a new design. She can even use
pieces of jewellery in her
clothes designing and intricate
bead work (applique).
And if you're in the market
for a really unique costume,
she has designed clothing for
"just about every possible era
from Medieval to futuristic."
Her jesigns have also
included figure skating and
dance costumes.
Grainger said her store
appeals to people who want
something out of the ordinary
but something that is useful
and functional. She said her
work also appeals to people
who are interested in fine
craftsmanship, something
Grainger admires about this
area.
"There are so many fine
artists and craftsmen. in the
area. I would like to get them
involved eventually to do
things for the store," she said.
Grainger's hobby of collect-
ing over the years has led to
her collection of antique fans
and hand bags on display at the
store.
Maplewood residents busy with activities
Residents of Maplewood are
enjoying the cooler days of
September and have been very
busy with several activities
during the month.
A group of residents
thoroughly enjoyed a trip to
Hensall in August where they
toured the grounds at the home
of Bill Gibson. The flowers
and fish pond were beautiful.
After an entertaining hour of
music, residents were treated to
delicious homemade pie and
coffee. It was a great
afternoon.
Church services have
resumed at Maplewood.
Residents bid farewell to Rev.
James Sloan as he gave his
final sermon before moving to
Corunna. He will surely be
missed. Everyone also enjoyed
services from Rev. Bruce Cook
and Rev. Cheryl Ann
Stadelbauer-Sampa.
It's always a pleasure to have
music in our midst. Thanks to
Carol Carter, Bill Gibson and
Marion Rose for playing the
good old tunes to sing along to.
Dancing shoes were hauled
from the closets in preparation
for our visit from the Zurich
Connection. Arthur and Eleanor
Horst along with Lloyd and
Helen Otterbein played some
great music for everyone to
kick up their heels. Thanks for
your entertainment.
Geri Fashions of London set
up shop at Maplewood in order
for everyone to get their winter
wardrobe in order. Marjory
Maloney, Bea Kale, Mabel
Strong, Jean Ross, Helen Nott
and Viola Lawson did a super
job modelling the new fashions
for the fashion show. The
lucky winners of the door
pries went to Mavis Dalton,
Mabel Strong and Hazel
Dillon,
The ladies of Maplewood
welcomed Barbara Scou and
Betty Harris back for another
season of craft classes. They
have great ideas for our
Christmas bazaar which will be
held Sat. Dec. 2.
Cheryl Wilkinson gathered all
the Maplewood bakers together
for another baking session. The
end results were excellent -
nothing like homemade
goodies!
Weekly games of euchre and
bingo are still going strong.
Anyone who would like to join
in is more than welcome. Also,
