Local Optimist Club may fold
BY GREGOR CAMPBELL
Expositor Staff
Seaforth's Optimist Club may
be on its last legs.
The local club was founded
in 1968 but is down to 11
members and just clinging to
existence.
The club may officially go
under if enough new en-
thusiasm can't be generated by
October 22, when a Sunday
morning meeting has been
scheduled at the Optimist Hall
at 9:30 a.m. The Lieutenant -
Governor of this Optimist zone
and other representatives of
Optimist International are
scheduled to attend.
Seaforth President Mark
Smith says he can't pinpoint
the specifics of where interest
in the Optimist Club has gone.
Five years ago the Seaforth
service club had about 40
members:
"I don't think it will continue
if we can't generate enough
interest."
It is apparently not a 6roblem
unique to Seaforth. An Op-
timist Club. in Dublin only
lasted for a year, Hensall is
having problems and things are
"only so-so" in Goderich, ac-
cording to Smith. Clinton
•
seems to "be doing fairly well"
but there is a new club in
Vanastra that may affect its
membership.
Spare time is at a premium
for many people these days,
Smith says, and there are a lot
of things other than service
clubs going on. Younger mem-
bers have joined the club but
some have "discontinued" after
only a couple of years.
"We used to have a dinner
meeting once a month and it
was a fun night," the president
adds, "but now with only one
or two couples it doesn't make
for much of a meeting and the
dinners have been discontinued.
"It has become an all -work
and no -play situation for those
the club members who
remain."
Smith says the Optimist Club
locally, 'nationally and inter-
nationally has historically been
a big friend of youth and if the
club goes under in Seaforth it
will have repercussions in this
area.
The local youth group that is
seeking some type of Main
Street club house in Seaforth,
for instance, has been using
Optimist Hall regularly since it
was offered earlier this year.
In the early 1970s the Op-
timists took over care and
control of what is now known
as Optimist Park, but the
decline in membership has
meant no members to control
and the park is now run by the
Town of Seaforth, through its
Recreation Department.
Op-
timist Hall was completed in
1974.
An Optimist Winter Carnival
was once a regular and popular
event in Seaforth, beginning in
1969, but it too has since fallen
by the wayside.
Among many other activities,
the local club has always
donated generously to area
athletic organizations for youth,
for instance hockey, ball and
soccer. The club has also sup-
ported various youth exchan-
ges, fundraisers for the Heart
and Stroke Foundation, and has
donated many dollars to
Seaforth Community Hospital's
Rehabilitation Department and
Children's Ward.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
The wife who drives from the
back seat is no worse than the
husband who cooks from the
dining room table.
Nighthawks enjoy bingo games
The Hensall Presbyterian
ladies led an evening bingo this
week for all the nighthawks
among us. We have certainly
appreciated the weekly bingos
the ladies have provided in
September.
Tuesday afternoon's worship
service with Shirley Luther was
well attended. In the evening
The Lakeview Singers gave a
lovely concert in the hallways.
Winnie Hutton, volunteer
chaplain led Bible Study
Wednesday afternoon.
Gladys VanEgmond and her
Queensway
Old Tyme Music group
entertained at our monthly
birthday party on Thursday
afternoon. Birthdays celebrated
were: Mildred Gingerich,
Harold Tripp, Jack Lowe,
Mabel Selves, and Winona
Jacobi.
On Friday morning Resident
Council met and discussed
several issues. In the afternoon
some retirement home residents
attended Aafke Van Wieren's
funeral. Shc and Hazel Daer,
who passed away recently, will
be missed by all.
