THE HURON EXPOSITOR, $•pt•mb.r 27, 1995-11 New coaching team upbeat about Centenaires Both rookie head coaches of the Seaforth Centenaires are pleased with what they've seen on the ice so far and eager to get at the real thing, the regular season which begins here Friday. That opener will be a test. The Port Stanley Lakers, Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D"evelopment League finalists for the past two Seasons, will be at the Seaforth and District Community. Centres for an 8:30 start. The Lakers look strong again. They bumped off the junior B Stratford Cullitons and Chatham Mic Macs, but were also trounced 13-1 by the St. Thomas Stars, in their pre- season preparations. But the Centenaires haven't been getting ready against pushovers. They tied the defen- ding league champion Thames - ford Trojans 4-4 in their most recent pre -season game Friday night at the arena, after wal- loping them 9-2 at Thamesford earlier in their exhibition schedule. In between Seaforth bounced the Western Junior C League's Hanover Barons with relative ease "I see a lot of potential," says new co-head coach Dave Mur- ray. "Both 'fhamesford and Port Stanley arc good tests. They have been the cream of the crop recently in this league." If the Cents have a weakness right now, Murray says, it is that many players are "untested". They either haven't played junior before, or are returning after a season's layoff. "We have a mix of kids from town and the arca, but a definite local flavour," he adds. "They seemed to come together quickly and have shown a lot of cohesiveness on the ice and dressing room." Dave's head coaching cohort, Jim Campbell, says the Cents' powerplay has been a pleasant surprise, as is the quality of players on this year's squad. "Everything so far has been a plus," he says. "It is easy to coach when you've got the players. There are a lot of good hockey players on this team." THE NEXT STEP The Cents finished fifth in their nine -team division last year, and have played exactly .500 hockey the past two seasons, winning the same number of games as they have lost. Campbell sees .500 hock- ey as this season's starting point. "We have good leaders and arc playing as a team," he says. Sorne of our veterans are showing good maturity, and are leading by example." "And our powerplay has ben phenomenal." In their last three pre -season games the Centenaires have scored 13 powerplay goals, out of a total of 21. They scored three in Friday night's tie against the defending champs, who beat every other team they played but the Centenaires this pre -season. The Centenaires, who have been on the ice since Aug. 22, play their final pre, -season game tonight at Tavistock. They will be in Lambeth Satur- day night at 8 p.m. for their second game of the regular season, and at Lucan next Wednesday night at 8:15 p.m. for their third game. Both Murray and Campbell are former teammates on the only Centenaires squad to have ever won an OHA title, in 1985-86, as was the Cents' new assistant coach, Dave Akey, who has been running practices. Jeff Flanagan, Jason Hender- son, Jason Dunseith and Steve Mclnally scored for the Cen- tenaires. The two teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and Seaforth led 3-2 after the second. In addition to the above carded players, the Centenaires plan to use the following af- filiates (who have been playing with them in the pre -season), regularly from the Seaforth midgets: Shaun Anstett (f), 18, Brent Hulley (d), Jered Munro (d), Jason Smith (f), Dylan Wick (d), Scott Wood (g). The Seaforth juniors released their fourth player from last year's team on Friday. Former goaltender Tim Swan was released to the Wingham Iron - men, for use as an affiliate with the junior B Listowel Cyclones, on terms acceptable to the Centenaires' Executive. Hockey -playing brothers join pro teams in farflung areas Professional hockey player "Rem" Murray of the Dublin area was assigned to Cape Breton of the American Hock- ey League by the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers last week. The graduate of the Michigan State Univer- sity Spartans recently signed a two-year contract with the Oilers. Meanwhile, his brother Pat, who recently got married, is playing pro hockey in Essen Germany this season. He was with Kalamazoo last year. Another brother, Greg, hasn't yet decided where he is going to play hockey this winter and has recently been skating to stay in shape with Seaforth's junior Centenaires, a team all three once played for, now coached by another brother and former Centenaire, Dave. Greg was with the Eastern Hockey League's Columbus Chill last year. Parents, Ron and Theresa Murray of RR 2 Dublin, are still at home and not playing or coaching hockey anywhere this year. Van Bakel Lincs' captain Greg Van Bakel of the Dublin area has been named this year's captain of the St. Marys Lincolns. Van Bakel, 16, is the son of John and Marg Van Bakel of RR 2 Dublin and in his second season with the Western Junior B League hockey team, The Lincs have also signed defenceman Ben Sen of Strat- ford, who played for Seaforth's junior Centenaires as a 15 - year -old two seasons ago.
