DAVID EMSLIE PHOTO Principal oversees. construction BY DAVID EMSLIE CLINTON - While workers bustled around the halls and rooms at St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School last week, an understandably proud principal toured the facilities and gave the guarantee the new school will be open on Sept. 5.• Principal Ray Contois has been involved with the school since it was still in the plan- ning stages. In an interview Last year, he explained that the decision to have the principal involved from the planning stages right through the erec- tion of the facilities was made to ensure that "the direction of the school will be developed over time from day one." Last week, Contois continued to have input into the building of the school, as workers put on the finishing touches. At one point during the tour, he stopped to consult on the colors for the three-point line and key on the school's new basketball court, while later a question arose over a light for the sanctuary. ' The chance to see the buil- ding of a school from blueprints to opening day has been an exciting one for Con- tois, who termed it a "once in a lifetime opportunity." A tour of the new school begins in the chapel, which the principal said is the "focal point of the school." An open concept was used in the plan- ning for the chapel, which is surrounded by glass and is located just inside the school's main doors. The space, Contois explained, can be used for both religious purposes or for a meeting room. In the chapel will be a stained glass cross, which will be lit up at night and will be visible to people out for an evening stroll. Off of the chapel is the counselling arca, which will also have an office for the school's chaplain, Father Mark Poulin. While the school will ob- viously have a spiritual focus, Contois also hopes to promote a strong sense of school spirit. Some of this spirit is sure to arise from the new gymnasium, which will feature a huge representation of the school's mascot, an eagle, on centre court. As a new facility, the principal explained the gym will also have the unique capability of being wired electronically. With this feature, he said, sporting events can be filmed in the gym, and shown live on a 15 -foot screen in the cafctorium, or in the LWNSALL SHUFFLEBOARD (Aug. 22 results) Six -game winners: Dave Wcxxlward, 478; Ethel McMurtric, 455; Evelyn McBeth, 392; Doug Imslic, 375; Hugh McKay, 369; Emma Goldman, 367; Pearl McKnight, 350; Hazel McEwan, 348. individual classrooms. The library will be in keeping with the modem theme running throughout the school. Featuring three seminar rooms off of its main room, the library will have hook-ups for Internet access. "Most of the library will be electronic," Contois explained, noting that the library was set up so that it can move towards the next century. Directly off of the library is an arca where students will work on such subjects are desktop publishing, architec- ture, landscaping, building computers, and rebuilding small engines. In this space, Contois explain, the school will also haile`the capabilities to do professional printing work, while students will also be able to print their own t - shirts. Students will also learn the proper operation of video cameras, and they will be able to edit their work in an editing and sound room. Contois hopes, with their capabilities, that students and staff will be able to produce a video year- book, in contrast to the traditional book style. Up a short flight of stairs from this technological centre is another unique feature for the school - a television studio. From this arca, students will be able to broadcast school news, and the school will even have the equipment which will enable them to change electronic backdrops behind the announcers. Directly off of the television studio is the school's stage, located in the cafetorium. With the capabilities to close off the front of the stage, and with its proximity to the television studio, Contois said the school then has a complete filming studio. As the school will be begin- ning with a small enrolment, no food services company will be taking on the job of serving St. Anne's, but Contois said that there will be vending machines, and negotiations are in the works to have some local businesses selling food to the students. Down, the road, the principal sees the day when students will operate their own food services in the school, all the while learning yet another trade. The cafetorium will also be a place for the staff and students to mingle, as there will not be a separate room where the staff will eat. Contois hopes that this mingling will help develop respect between the staff and students, and at the same time help develop school spirit. The science area of the school will also differ somewhat from traditional schools, as instead of having laboratory facilities for students in each room, there will be a small lab for demonstration purposes in each of the three science rooms. The science rooms, however, will all con- nect to one large lab. In this lab, the principal hopes that in the future, older students will be able to work with their younger counterparts. Parents and students will be given an opportunity to view PUBLIC SALE NOTICE UNSOLD SCHOOL QUALITY JANOME SEW AND SERGE STITCH SEWING MACHINES JANOME CANADA ordered the purchase of Targe quantities of our newest sew and serge stitch sewing machines, anticipating that they would get school orders for them. This meeting, Contois hopes, will ease the transition to a new school for the 128 Grade 9 students enrolled as of last week. The principal hopes that the combination of a well chosen staff, and modem new facilities will make the children want to be at school. "We want to have a spiritual focus, and at the same time, a real sense of community, so they want to be here," he said. He added that he has already told his students that he hopes at the beginning of the day, they will want to be at St. Anne's, and when the school day ends, they will wish they could stay a little, longer. He admitted .that this is a large goal, but said that it is one he feels the school can meet.
