Visitors have different impressions
BY TIM CUMMING
Expositor Editor
Two young women shared
different impressions of Canada
while visiting Huron County
recently.
For Julie Alvey, a 23 -year-
old from Derbyshire, England,
life in Ontario goes by at a
slower pace.
For Australia's Nikki
Egginton, 25, she finds the
pace a little faster in Huron
than back home in Narrigon, a
town of 5,000.
For Julie, the weather has
been a little too hot. For Nikki,
a native of the southern hemi-
sphere, the weather has been
just right.
The two delegates are taking
part in international exchanges
with their equivalent of the
Junior Farmers organization.
"I've seen a different way of
life, a different style of
farming," says Nikki. "I've met
heaps of people and seen parts
of Ontario even the locals
haven't seen."
For Julie, coming to Canada
was a dream come true.
"I've always wanted to come
abroad," she said. "Everybody
who talks about Canada says
it's wonderful."
While in Ontario the del-
egates have seen major attrac-
tions in urban centres like
Montrdal and Toronto, visiting
the CN Tower and SkyDome.
They have also lived in rural
areas, seeing cash crops and
livestock production up close.
Beef and dairy operations are
traditional commodity groups
witnessed by the delegates but
the women have also seen elk,
emu and milk -producing sheep.
Julie Alvey comes from a
small beef farm with about 30
head of cattle in the village of
Tibshelf. In Canada she has
been able to see some relative-
ly large farming operations.
At home, she says there is
more parlour milking in dairy
operations with more use of
computer systems. Although
from a farming background she
teaches design at a college

laugh in front of Seaforth Town Hall last week. They came to Huron as part of an
international exchange but their views of Canada are somewhat different.
back home. She has a degree in
silversmithing and jewellery
design. She also works at a
school for the deaf.
Canada is one of many stops
Nikki Egginton has made in
her lifetime of travel.
"North America was one of
the few continents Ihadn't
visited," she said. The world
traveller has joumeyed to
Europe, Asia and now Huron
County.
How does the woman from
down under find the people
from the Great White North?
"The people are probably a
little more forward and open
than most people."
Nikki may take credit for
some of the warm weather she
seemingly brought with her
from Australia.

in farming between Australia
and Canada, according to
Nikki. She says there are very
few sheep here. Whereas in
Huron there may be three cuts
of hay in a year in Australia
there would be one.
The Australian exchange
participant was amused that
Canadians have to measure
moisture levels for wheat. In
Australia the threat of fire is
more prevalent than the threat.
of excess moisture.
Nikki has 'feet in two
worlds' of agriculture and
health care. She is a supervisor
at an agricultural farm as well
as working as a diabetes educa-
tor. She would like to return to
Canada one day to see the
West Coast.
Julie Alvey is a member of
the Young Farmers of England.
Nikki Egginton is a member of
Rural Youth of Australia.
The two women have won
people over with their warm
personalities and ever-present
smiles.
They say international
exchanges provide an opportun-
ity which could never be
encountered by tourists.
"You wouldn't get to see the
farming, meet the people in the
same way if you were just on a
holiday," said Julie.
Nikki Egginton left Ontario
last week to visit Montana and
return to her native Australia
but' Julie Alvey remains in
Ontario until Sept. 15.
Both women recommend
international exchanges for
interested young people.
"It makes the world seem a
little bit smaller," said Nikki.

THE BRIAR PATCH
at the Seaforth Curling Club was
a huge success thanks to all who
attended Homecoming '95.
All members, volunteers and
friends of curling in Seaforth did a
super job. A special thanks to our
junior curlers who proved that
there are no age limits on great
volunteers.
A special thanks to our
understanding neighbours who
we hope enjoyed "Suzy Q and Mr.
B" as much as the rest of our
friends.
Thanks to all
