Juvenile girls take silver in 'B' pool
Area broomball teams at Nationals
The Central West juvenile
boys finished with two wins
and three losses in the
preliminaries, with a 2-0
victory over Alberta and a
2-1 triumph over New
Brunswick. They couldn't
dent the twine in games
against the Ontario
champions, Saskatchewan
and Quebec though, losing
3-0, 8-0 and 2-0
respectively.
Quebec ended up winning
the Gold, going undefeated
and out -scoring opponents
34-3 in the process.
In the consolation playoffs
Central West lost to both
Nova Scotia and
Newfoundland, the latter by
a 2-0 score.
Coach Robert Hunking
says goaltender Steve
Dearing from Staffa was
Central West's best player
in the toumament, and
without him the scores
might have been much
higher.
The Quebec entry could
give most men's teams a
good run for their money,
he added.
Two area juvenile
broomball teams recently
competed at the National
Junior Broomball
Championships at Cornwall,
April 27 to 30.
The Central West juvenile
girls finished second on the
consolation side and won
silver medals. The Central
West juvenile boys had
difficulty putting the ball in
the net throughout the
tournament, but made it to
the consolation round where
they finished last.
Nova Scotia scored in the
first five minutes of the
game and despite being out -
shot 9-3 in the second '
period edged the Central
West girls 1-0 for the
consolation title.

McMillan gave the area
girls a 3-0 victory over New
Brunswick in the playoff
game that gave them a berth
in the consolation final.

hopefully solving one of the
team's biggest problems last
season. They were thin at the
top, with the manager spread
too thin filling in as assistant
coach from Christmas on.
The three new head honchos
wasted little time starting to
prepare for next season, which
gets underway in slightly more
than three months. They got
together Friday night to
familiarize themselves with the
nuts and bolts of OHA
regulations, prospects and
players.
The team only automatically
loses one player who is now
overage, Ted Sills, and has six
players eligible for two overage
spots on next years squad.
All three say they see
coaching as a "challenge", so
will see who shows up at
training camp which starts the
third week of August then be
"flexible" and play it as it lays.
They say "balance" will be
central to their combined
coaching philosophy and that
winning teams like the 84-86
Centenaires need a little bit of
everything.
"You start with good
goaltending and work your way
out," Campbell says.
"A well-balanced team needs
every type of player," Murray
says, "good defence,
goaltending, a checking line
and bangers and crashers.
"It is the nature of the beast."
"Fire -wagon hockey," says
Akey.
