The Huron Expositor, 1995-05-10, Page 22 -THE HURON IXPOSITOR, May 10, 101/5 WINNERS IN EDUCATION - Winners at the 'Celebration of Excellence Dinner', presented by the Huron County Board of Education and Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, were Paul Menary, Brenda Menary, Christina Van Poucke, Marcy McCall, Sarah Johnston, Joanne Flanagan, Brad Moore and Steve Hook. Not present in photo is Carly Price. Education awards given They have all contributed to education at Seaforth District High School (SDHS). Paul and Brenda Menary, Joanne Flanagan, Steve Hook, Christina van Poucke, Carly Price, Brad Moore, Marcy McCall and Sarah Johnston were all recognized at the 10th Celebration of Excellence Dinner sponsored by the Huron County Board of Education and Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation. •Paul and Brenda Menary were introduced as a 'dynamic couple' who had contributed countless hours to education in Seaforth. Paul has been coach of the senior boys' basketball . team for the past three years and assistant coach of the junior and senior boys' basketball teams in previous years. He has also taken on Co-op students at Hullett Conservation Area. Brenda helped start the SDHS cheerleading program and serves as coach, devoting two evenings a week for the past two `years. 'Joanne Flanagan -has worked with exceptional children for the last seven years. She was employed in the Challenging Learning Needs setting at Seaforth Public School for five years, assisting in particular a student with physical needs before transferring to the high school to continue working with that student. She works in the grade nine integration pro- gram. •Steve Hook has taught chem- istry and science in Huron County for 32 years including 27 years as Head of Science at Seaforth. He has been active as a coach, teacher and represen- tative for the Ontario Second- ary School Teachers' Feder- ation. •Christina van Poucke has worked on the OSAID commit- tee and done volunteer work for the Agricultural Society and Cancer Society. She is also an honour roll student and winner of the Law subject award. She is currently in her OAC year at SDHS. •Carly Price has been consist- ently present on the honour roll. She is .an accomplished athlete, a member of the vol- leyball, basketball and track teams. She also works as an assistant coach and instructor for an annual basketball clinic. • Brad Moore has been called a student leader. As well as serving in many student repre- sentative positions (including student's council president) he has been an accomplished athlete on hockey, soccer, tennis and School Reach teams. • Marcy McCall is on the hon- our roll each year and is a member of volleyball, basket- ball and track teams. She has been an assistant coach for the midget girls' volleyball team. She is Athletic Association Treasurer, Intramural Commit- tee member, yearbook staff member, grade nine homeroom helper and Seaforth Agricul- tural Society Fair Ambassador. • Sarah Johnston has been on the honour roll each year but also serves as a peer mentor, basketball clinic instructor and assistant coach for the midget girls' volleyball team. She has taken part in community activ- ities such as volunteer work for the local hospital. She is a carded volleyball referee.T h e guest speaker at the April 27 Celebration of Excellence Dinner was Stephen Lewis, former provincial leader of the New Democratic Party. Women's League supports parish The St. Columban Catholic Women's League held their May meeting on Tuesday, May 2, in the rectory meeting room. The meeting, chaired by Joanne Melady, was opened with the league prayer. Proceeds from the Good Friday bake sale will be sent to St. Anne's Parish in the Dom- inican Republic. Invitations were received from the St. James C.W.L., Seaforth to their 1995 "Spring Fling" on Wednesday, May 17 at 8 p.m. in the Seaforth Legion hall, also to the St, Vincient De Paul C.W.L., Mitchell Spring Bazaar in their parish hall on Wednes- day, May 17 at 8 p.m. The annual St. Columban St. Columban by Dorothy Dillon 345-2883 C.W.L. June Social is on Wednesday, June 14 at 8 p.m. in the St. Columban Church hall. Convenor for this event is Mary Ryan. There will be entertainment, a bake sale, penny sale, the raffle draw and door prizes. The meeting closed with prayer. Sympathy of the community is extended to the family and relatives of Anna Mclaughlin who died Sunday morning at the Seaforth Community Hos- pital. 4•H REPORT by JEREMY RYAN On Thursday, May 4, the St. Columban group 4-H Friends had their fifth meeting. We started with the secretaries reading their reports. Next we discussed the roll call. We had a veterinarian from the Mitchell-Monkton Veterinary Clinic talk to us about how to care for small animals. He brought his dog, Max, along and showed us some tricks. We closed the meeting with our motto "Learn to do by doing". The next meeting will be held in the St. Columban Church hall on Thursday, May 11. This meeting will be a catchup night for our books.
