Lots to explore at Ag Museum
•from page 26A
A series of exhibit buildings
complete the Museum's lay out,
and offer one of the largest agricul-
tural equipment collections in North
America. Explore the tractor barns
and discover the Rumely Oil Pull
and eagle tractors. A few steps
away in the threshing barns, view
the display of Sawyer -Massey,
Champion 1047, and Lobsinger
Lion threshers, to name just a few.
Costumed interpreters, crops, and
livestock bring the site alive with
the sights, sounds and smells of
country living.
Families, bus tours, and school
students really enjoy the oppor-
tunity to roam the past and connect
it to the future. There is a variety of
programming for all groups at the
Museum and range from special
events to structured educational
programs. For example, the
popularity of Dairy Days continues
to grow for students and visitors
alike.
Now entering its third year, Dairy
Days celebrates Ontario's world
renowned dairy industry by turning
the Museum site into a `dairy
extravaganza", showing historical
dairy practices and comparing them
to the modern day methods. This
udderly awesome show features the
six main dairy breeds, information
on animal care, scheduled milking
demonstrations, and machinery syte
as the tractor, baler and combine
which are required for a dairy
operation.
This educational event is not
without its "cheesy" side. Cheese
operations-- Pine River, MillBank,
Brights Cheese Factory, Brights
Cheese House and Tavistock --are
donating cheddar and curd samples
for you to taste. Other industry
players contributing to the success
of this program include Ault Foods,
Beatrice, Shur -Gain, Ontario Har-
vestore, Ontario Farm Animal
Council, the Women's Institute, in
total over 30 industry organizations.
Dairy Days begins on Tuesday,
June 6 and continues through the
weekend Sunday, June 11 with
family-oriented activities.
The Museum also houses a prize-
winning exhibit the Ontario
Agricultural Museum Quilt collec-
tion. Each year, prize-winning quilts
from local fairs compete for the
Ontario Agricultural Museum
"Provincial Grand Champion Quilt"
title. This winning quilt is then
added to the Museums collection.
Today, the Ontario Agricultural
Museum Quilt Collection consists
of 17 of the province's best quilts.
Tractor and steam buffs will
enjoy the annual Great Canadian
Antique Tractor Field Days. Attrac-
ting over 60 gasoline engines, steam
equipment and tractors, this fully -
operational event will this year host
the International Cockshuu Annual
Meet. The event runs July 14, 15
and 16.
Expect to see all aspects of far-
ming and farm life at the Museum.
Whether you are interested in the
daily life of a farm woman in the
1860s, or in the mechanics of a
Sawyer -Massey steam engine, or in
the fine skills of a tradesman, the
Ontario Agricultural Museum helps
you appreciate our rich rural
heritage.
To make the most of your visit,
set aside several hours to tour the
more than 30 buildings and ex-
hibits. Make sure you stop in at the
Cradle'n Flail restaurant for a meal-
-especially for a piece of chunky
apple pie. There is also a gift shop
on site featuring some items made
by the Museum's artisans.
To reach the Ontario Agricultural
Museum, take Hwy 401 east- to
Milton exit 312 or 320 and follow
signs.
