Farm Ventures helps
develop opportunities
Women and Rural Economic
Development, a provincial or-
ganization based in Stratford, has
received fundings to provide con-
sultation and training assistance to
farm families who wish to develop
new income generating oppor-
tunities. "Farm Ventures" is a pilot
project that will offer farm families
a chance to develop income oppor-
tunities either on or off the fern►,
and will assist them in the decision-
making, planning and establishment
of these opportunities.
The project area includes the
northern parts of Huron, Perth and
Wellington Counties. Three local
development organizations will
work in partnership to determine
area training needs and preferences.
These are; the Huron Business
Centre, the North Wellington Ad-
visory Group and the Milverton-
Momington Economic Development
Corporation. Funding for the project
is provided by OTAB and OATI.
This is the first time that a
program with these aims has been
tried in Ontario, so the first step
will be to determine the most effec-
tive, relevant and accessible means
of delivery. Initial discussions with
interested farm families will take
place during February and March,

Margarine
can look
like butter
in Ontario
Queen's Park has dropped re-
quirements that margarine sold in
Ontario be colored to distinguish it
from butter.
The changes were made because
of margarine imports now allowed
under the new General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) deal,
said Agriculture Minister Elmer
Buchanan.
The Ontario Milk Marketing
Board wrote to Buchanan expres-
sing its disappointment with the
government changing the legis-
lation. The Board felt it provided
needed color differentiation in the
spreads market, said OMMB chair-
man John Core.
However, the Board is pleased
with Ontario's cornmiunent to seek
national standards on margarine -
butter blends and irritation dairy
products.
Buchanan has said that Ontario
will take the lead to establish
national standards for blends and
imitation products, as well as strict
labelling requirement for such
products.
