Women
should
win by
the rules
by Ann Striker
The OFA conference was without
a doubt exciting, stimulating,
thought provoking, and truly
educational. While one speaker
encouraged the audience to look
further afield than the U.S. for
markets, another explained how to
blast a DNA molecule and splice it
into a completely different species
to create, for example, a pest -resis-
tant potato. We appear to be
heading for a different world.
The final speaker in a most
dynamic way told us to get up off
our butts, enjoy life, and become
responsible to ourselves. Only when
we speak up and become more
alive will we be able to take the
lead. He explained that the only
inheritance that we owe our
children is that we must teach them
to have feelings, a passion for life,
and a responsibility for themselves.
I also learned more about the
political process and more about
how to play the game. Politics and
policies are not necessarily made on
the floor of an annual meeting. The
back room is where politics and
ideas are created and explained.
The fine tuning, addendum and
supporters are aligned the
spokesperson is polished and given
extra information. This is an impor-
tant arena for development of any
idea.
This may be a new game for
women; but, if we are going into
the world of politics and policy, we
have to know the rules, how to play
and how to win. We cannot expect
to change the rules when we are the
new players on the team. Better to
learn the game, play it well, and
improve upon the rules in the (near)
future.
Is it not more effective to slowly
and steadily improve the system by
bringing it on side, rather than to
split the rural community wide
open? If we all clearly com-
municate the needs and wants of
the community, there will be better
support for change.
It takes time for change to be
accepted. The most effective
method is through understanding
and communication. Acceptance
from within oneself is more effec-
tive than any preaching and ranting
from outside.
It is better to learn the rules, play
by them, play better than anyone
else, and win on the playing field.
Let's not waste time ranting about
unfair treatment. Let's learn more
about the political game and play to
win. (Striker is a director on the
Ontario Farm Women's Network)
