Take in the sights, sounds and smells of spring. Stroll through the apple orchard or curl up with a good book under your favorite tree just to enjoy the sweet smell of apple blossoms. Trade the honking of cars for the honking of geese, the quacking of ducks or the chirping of baby chicks. Where can you find such an ex- perience? Thanks to the 126 On- tario farmers of the Ontario Farm & Country Accommodations (OFCA), you can get acquainted with rural life by actually spending some time living on a farm. Members of the OFCA believe it is time that people had an oppor- tunity to get acquainted with rural life. They offer an experience of a life time for individuals, families and friends. "A generation ago people went to the country to visit grandparents or aunts and uncles. but many of today's families do not have rural roots any more," says OFCA Executive Director Sharon Grose. "With the farm population decreasing, people living in the city may not have the opportunity to experience life in the country as they did a generation or two ago." Plants, insects can cause reactions Landscape/nursery workers are in constant contact with their outdoor environment. Just the nature of the job means that they will at some time come into contact with plant material or insects which may cause adverse effects in some individuals. Certain plants including some weeds may cause skin irritations, rashes and dermatitis. Asthma like respiratory problems can also occur when working around airborne hazards such as molds, pollens, wood dusts etc. Employees should be aware of the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions such as use of gloves, long sleeved shirts or respiratory protection if needed. Employees should make their employer aware of sensitivities and allergies. Biting and stinging insects, in some individuals can cause extreme reactions which could lead to serious health problems. Some insects cause reactions by injecting chemicals into the victim's bloodstream when they bite. Wasps and bees however inject a venom or poison which can cause varied reactions from irritation to in rare cases severe allergic responses. Employees should use insect repellents and wear appropriate clothing in areas where they could come into contact with the pests. Insect nests should be removed only by qualified pest control experts.
