claimed the lives of two local
residents and destroyed their home.

Dublin -area native Darrell Dietz
took part in the Ironman Triathalon
World Championship in Hawaii on
Oct. 15. He is the son of Mervin
and Norma Dietz of RR 1 Dublin.

The Parr Line women's broomball
team is headed to the National
Broomball Championships in Barrie
in April.

Seaforth Mayor Hazel Hildebrand
says in a newspaper interview that
she was not going to seek re-elec-
tion to the Mayor's post but that
she would miss municipal service.
Deputy -Reeve Garry Osborn also
did not seek re-election.
Bill Scott and Dr. John Turnbull
received the Lions Club Inter-
national President's Certificate of
Appreciation.

Sixteen combines and a team of
volunteers joined to harvest the
114 -acre growing facility east of
Seaforth to aid the world's starving.
It was a moving testimonial to
community cooperation.

Dave Campbell, of Seaforth, is a
member of Pastime, a quartet which
finished second in Ontario cham-
pionships for barbershop singing.

New signs were erected at
Seaforth Lions Park in memory of
James A. Stewart.

won the Ontario Pipe Band As-
sociation Ontario Champion
Supreme, Grade 2 solo Drumming

new commissioner for the proposed
Tuckersmith telephone cooperative.

Ontario Agriculture Minister
Elmer Buchanan spoke to the an-
nual meeting of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture in Brus-
sels.

What once looked like a proje
doomed to failure received a ne
lease on life from municipal coun
cils. Five municipalities in the
Central Huron region joined to sign
an agreement in Scaforth for the
Central Huron Mobility Service
(CHuMS) mobility bus project.

Lloyd Eisler Jr, and Isabelle Bras-
seur, professional figure skaters
from Scaforth and Ste. Jean -sur -
Richelieu, Quebec, opened the
Royal Agricultural Winter Fair with
a gala horse show.
In a three-person race Heather
Robinet won the last remaining seat
on Seaforth Council. All other
positions were vacant.

Former Councillor Ron Murray
captured the Reeve's position in a
two-way race in McKillop
Township.
Fergus Kelly also joined the
council.

Tuckersmith Township Reeve Bill
Carnochan was acclaimed but Larry
McGrath won a three-way contest
for Deputy -Reeve. New councillors
on Tuckersmith Council were Doug
Vock, of Egmondville, and Bernie
MacLellan, of Bruceficld.

In Hullett Township Tom Cunnin-
gham narrowly beat out a challenge
from Hugh Flynn for the Reeve's
spot.
Sharon Chuter, of RR 1 Varna,
was named new General Manager
of the Tuckersmith Municipal
Telephone System which may
become a cooperative in the new
year.

A 38 -year-old Seaforth hunter
was hit by a stray bullet while
hunting near Hanover.
* **
The selection of Mitchell as home
for the new District Health Council
raised the ire of Seaforth Council
which felt the decision was made
hastily.

Angie Southgate, of Seaforth,
won from among 200 schools in the
Canadian Living Foundation's
Breakfast for Learning program for
her coffee mug design and slogan.

Seaforth residents were honoured
for their contributions to the town
with Citizenship Awards. Winners
were Helen McNaughton, for civic
service; Lynn Devereaux, for ser-
vice to sports and Mary Nolan for
Humanitarian Service.

Recreation awards were presented
to Norah Eckert and Terry Johnston
at the Seaforth Business
Improvement Association (BIA)
banquet.
Businessman Bob Fisher received
a BIA service award.

A ribbon -cutting and reception
was held at Seaforth Community
Hospital to open the helicopter
launching pad at the hospital.

Seaforth native Boyd Devereaux
is named to the Ontario under -17
hockey team.

pion Oats at the Royal Agricultural

The Huron -Perth Roman Catholic
Separate School Board announced
that a demountable gym for St.
Columban school was purchased at
a cost of $50,000.

A local high school teacher
criticized a local cable company's
marketing of a new movie network
service. Other, larger cable com-
panies also became targets of at-
tacks for requiring people to phone
to cancel the service even if they
never asked for it.

Hibbert Township saw an election
re-count but Lou Maloney retained
his seat despite the recount.

Stringent new smoking regulations
required teachers and students to
buu out on school property.

Helen Johns beat four other can-
didates for the nomination. of the
Huron County Progressive Conser-
vatives for the provincial election.

Seaforth medicalstaff branched
into Brussels by opening the Brus-
sels-Seaforth Medical Clinic in that
community.

The Province of Ontario an-
nounced it would freeze spending
for hospitals.

A new company started up
production of the Sherlock -Manning
piano business in Vanastra years
after its closing.

About 3,000 people attended the
popular Farm Toy and Doll Show
sponsored by the Seaforth Agricul-
tural Society.

The Huron Plowmen's As-
sociation announced it would seek
to host the International Ploughing
Match in 1999.

The Mid -Huron Landfill Site
Board was pleased to hear it would
be spared a costly hearing under the
Environmental Protection Act.
A provincial change in regulations
lifted the need for the hearing
which would have cost hundreds of
thousands of dollars to the par-
ticipating municipalities.

The Huron Soil and Crop
Improvement Association presented
its Booster Awards to Fred and
Larry Elder, Glen Warwick, Jim
O'Toole (on behalf of OMAFRA
staff) and Steve Carruthers.

At the 4-H Awards night in Clin-
ton Darcy Flanagan, of RR 1
Dublin, received the Townsend Tire
Award for the youngest 4-H mem-
ber active in the Sodbuster Club.
Other Sodbuster awards went to
Charlene Townsend, of RR 4
Seaforth and Jeff Grobbink, of RR
3 Walton.

was acclaimed as Warden of Huron
County.

Phone scams bilked Hensall,
Egmondville and other Seniors out
of tens of thousands of dollars in
December.

Seaforth's last living veteran of
World War I, Harry Palin, passed
away. He was 96.

Harry and Dianne Mero, of Eg-
mondville, won first prize in the
Seaforth Optimist Club's annual
Christmas house decoration contest.
Dave and Kathy Nigh were second
and Hugh and Bernice McPherson
were third.

In a rare occurrence, the three
school boards serving Huron and
Perth had a joint meeting. They met
in Seaforth where they made such
suggestions as a common school
calendar.

Hibbert Reeve Walter McKenzie
became Reeve of Perth County in a
three-person, two -ballot election.

The District Health Council held
a meeting at Seaforth Community
Hospital. The Huron -Perth DHC
does not yet have a permanent
office in Mitchell.
The National Hockey League
strike/lock-out has left the Ottawa
Senators' Dave McLlwain and
linesman Scott Driscoll on the
sidelines.

A class of graduates of an
Introduction to Self -Employment
course held a graduation dinner in
Seaforth.

The chairperson of the District
Health Council site selection com-
mittee rejected charges from
Seaforth Council that the selection
process didn't give Seaforth fair
consideration.
