Auburn boy saved his mother's life
BY MARK CR1PPS
former Expositor Reporter
Nine-year-old Jordin Rutledge
may not fully understand all the
attention he's received over the past
few months, but one thing's for
sure, he is a hero in the truest sense
of the word.
"There's been a lot of people
coming to the house to take pictures
of me," he said last Wednesday at
this home in Auburn. "I'm getting
a little bored, though."
At Jordin's age, who can blame
him being concerned about the
things that are more important in a
kid's world. Things like finding a
home for his five puppies; or
wondering what Santa will leave
under the tree on Christmas Day; or
when he will be able to dig into
one of the pies he and his mother
were baking last Wednesday.
But if it wasn't for Jordin's quick
thinking last spring, his mother
Sharon Liule might not be around
to share in the joys that are the
Christmas season.
It was April 29, 1994 and Jordin
and his mother were visiting a
relative in Greenville, North
Carolina.
At about 10 p.m. the pair had
stopped at an instant bank machine
when a man approached them and
demanded money.
Sharon didn't hesitate to hand
over the $100 she had just with
drawn, but it wasn't good enough
for the drug crazed bandit.
The man pulled out a gun, and
aimed it at Sharon and Jordin.
Sharon pushed Jordin aside just as
three shots were fired.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
When the commotion had settled,
Sharon Little was lying on the
ground with three bullet wounds to
her chest and arms.
Jordan bent over and asked his
mother: "Are you going to die?"
Sharon replied, "I think so."
Jordin said goodbye but remained
calm.
He proceeded to run across three
lanes of busy city traffic,
endangering his own life, and
jumped onto the running boards of
a 'tractor trailer that was slowing
down for a yield light.
Jordin banged on the driver's
door, and when it opened, he told
the man inside: "You have to help
my mommy. She's been shot and is
going to die.".... . -.
The driver made+ a call to 911,
and Jordin ran back to his mother.
He helped carry her to her car,
helped her inside, and locked the
doors.
Police and medical personal
arrived on the scene within minutes.
An ambulance driver later said
that if was not for Jordin's quick
reactions in getting help, his mother
would have bled to death.
Because of his bravery, Jordin
was recently awarded the Ontario
Community Newspapers
Association Junior Citizen of the
Year Award. Jordin was one of 11

Jordin said he is looking forward
to the trip to Toronto.
"My entire family gets to go for
free," he said with a smile.
But Jordin is still not sure how he
feels about the attention given to
him for his coutage and bravery in
saving his mom's life.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR.!
As another great year comes to a close,
we'd like to extend our warm wishes and
heartfelt thanks to all the good folks we've

"I don't really know how I feel
about it," he said. "I don't really
feel proud about what happened. It
was just instinct."
Jordin said he still has trouble
believing the events of Apr. 29
actually happened.
"I can't believe it happened. I
can't believe it was my mom. You
always read about these things in
the paper, or see it on television.
But you never dream it's going to
happen to your family.
"It makes you feel a little
